The world cup gave us its biggest shock result this year on Wednesday with reigning champions Germany being knocked out of the tournament. Having defeated Sweden in their last game thanks to a wonderful effort by Toni Kroos, the odds were stacked in Germany’s favour to win and progress when took on South Korea. They were humbled 2-0 to the contrary to exit the tournament and leave everyone stunned at the result. Sweden poured further salt on their wounds as they defeated Mexico 3-0 to ensure that they and Mexico progressed from Group F. In Group E, Brazil and Switzerland got favourable results from their matches to ensure that there were no surprises.
With Germany vs South Korea taking place at the same time as Mexico and Sweden’s match, German supporters around the world knew that nothing less than a win would see their side through. Leave aside a win, a dramatically poor Germany side were not even able to manage a draw in their biggest match of the tournament till now. The Germans struggled to open a South Korean defence that had not kept a single clean sheet till now. Toothless while going forward in attack, owing to the pathetic showing of players like Ozil and Werner, Germany were none better in defence. Korea defended with all their might as they looked to prove a point to everyone. Hell bent on leaving the world cup with at least a point from their three matches, Korea went one step better to get all 3 from the match. With news filtering in that Sweden were winning 3-0, Germany went in all out attack mode to find that elusive goal in their search for the knock-out stages. Man of the match Jo Hyeon-woo was a beast in goal as he thwarted out all German efforts to keep the score at 0-0. The German dreams were finally shot in the head after Kim scored in the 92nd minute and Captain Son got another in the 96th minute, both coming off lighting fast counter attacks. The loss for Germany and Sweden’s emphatic 3-0 over Mexico meant all the parts of the jigsaw fitted perfectly for Sweden to progress to the next round along with Mexico.
Group E was much simpler with Brazil and Switzerland coming out with expected results. Brazil V. Serbia saw Brazil win 2-0 comfortably with goals from Paulinho and Silva to see Brazil top the group. Switzerland on the other hand drew 2-2 against Costa Rica to finish behind Brazil.
