Virgil Van Dijk, Leo Messi, and Sadio Mane were tipped as the favorites to win this prestigious trophy with some pundits predicting it can be a shocking win for Van Dijk. Van Dijk had an amazing season winning the UCL and finishing as runners up in the Premier League last season.

He was the standout player of the Liverpool team and played every game for them. Leo Messi failing to have made the UCL final had fallen in ratings a little but as the result came, it was clear that such events are not a setback for the Magician. His performance in Spain was enough to impress the critics winning the La Liga and Copa Del Rey while scoring 36 goals. The 31-year-old attacker scored 51 goals in 49 matches along with 19 assists.

The award was presented to Messi by Luka Modric who broke the sequence of Ronaldo and Messi winning the prize. Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the absentees in the ceremony as he attended the ceremony held in Italy where he won the player of the year (Serie A).

One big surprise in the ranking was the position of Sadio Mane who has been the best-attacking midfielder since last year. Mane got the fifth spot finishing behind Mohamed Salah. Leo Messi himself said that he was surprised to see his ranking so down the list and praised him for his performance. Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker won the Yashine Trophy while Matthijs de Ligt won the newly-introduced Kopa Trophy.

Ballon d or Award 2019 Winner – For women’s football, it was no surprise as Megan Rapinoe won the Ballon d’Or Féminin. She won the World Cup with America while finishing as the top scorer of the tournament. England’s Lucy Bronze and America’s Alex Morgan finished at the second and third places respectively. Even after breaking almost every record possible, Messi still discovers new ways to set the bar higher. Looking at the current season it seems like the GOAT is likely to complete a seventh next year.
