The round of 16 ties in the football world cup were wrapped up on Thursday. Sweden V. Switzerland and England V Columbia gave us the last two teams to make the FIFA quarterfinal and with that completed the set of fixtures which will commence in the next two days from the 6th of July.  And staying true to the tune of the round of 16 till now, both the matches panned out to be extremely exciting, with both giving us nail-biting finishes. The England and Colombia match was the standout of the night with it becoming the fourth match of the round of 16 stage to go into penalties which England won 3-1 after Pickford’s heroics.

When two equally matches teams in Sweden and Switzerland took on each other, it was a prewritten that the match was going to be fought evenly and would end up going down all the way to the wire. And that is exactly what happened with an Emil Forsberg goal separating both the sides. A match that ended level after half-time with both sides creating some good chances but being successfully held out by the other’s defence, saw its first and only goal came in the 66th minute after Forsberg’s strike saw a massive deflection off Akanji to end up in the back of the net and see Sweden through to the next round. Sweden’s rise and progress this world cup has not only been meteoric but also extremely surprising. Is it really that surprising though? After all, this is the same side that showed Italy and Netherlands the exit door in the qualifications. Their performances in the world cup have been as good as any and it is high time we started taking them more seriously going into the quarterfinals.

England and Switzerland reach in fifa quarterfinal

The last match of the round of 16 made all of us stay up despite its late kick-off. And was it worth it? One of the most anticipated match in the round gave us everything we had hoped for and more. A fierce battle often turned unsavoury at moments with fights breaking out at several points in the match, making this the most aggressive match this world cup with a total of eight yellow cars being shown, six for the Colombian players alone. And that was exactly what the Colombians had strategized to do. Playing rough, they tackled too aggressively, pushing and moving England’s players around in a bid to rattle them up. Their tactic proved to be their own demise after Colombia’s foul play gave away a penalty to England which was coolly converted by striker Harry Kane. With the clock showing 93 minutes, the outcome was all but sealed before Yerry Mina pooped up to head down a corner and level the score to delirious celebrations by the Colombian players and supporters. The match went into 30 minutes of extra time before finally heading into penalties. Having lost the last all their three shootouts at the world cup, England finally lifted of their curse in style. Captain Kane and Pickford, the heroes of the night ensured that England progressed through with a 4-3 win on penalties. Stay tuned for FIFA quarterfinal match highlights.
