England staged an incredible fight back as they came back from 2-0 to lift the FIFA U17 World Cup India 2017 after they defeated Spain 5-2 on the night. Kolkata played host to an incredible final one that saw the match swing surprisingly against Spain. Leading 2-0, Spain looked set to repeat their performance of the U17 European Championship earlier this year when they had beaten England in the final to lift the title. A determined and resilient England team had other plans this time around as they came out in full force after trailing by 2 goals to take the title home. This is the second World Cup England have lifted this year after having won the FIFA U20 World Cup earlier.

A shaky start by England saw them concede two goals to Sergio Gomez in the 10th and 31st minute. Spain attacked with lightning-quick counterattacks as they stunned England to take the lead as soon as the 10th minute. It was end-to-end stuff from the start, with England not giving up and losing up despite conceding twice. Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster who ended up winning the Golden Boot led the charge for the English as he got a goal back for England just before half-time. Clearly vitalised by that goal, England came out in the second half a completely different beast. They levelled the score via Morgan Gibbs-White and did not stop in their intentions to build on that as they took the lead as golden boy Phil Foden found the back of the net in the 68th minute. The 68,000 plus strong crowd in Kolkata were treated to a fine performance by Phil Foden who got his second to wrap up the game for England 5-2. It was England’s night as a thrilling performance by them saw them be crowned U17 champions.

The third place match between Brazil and Mali saw Brazil win to seal the third place. Alan and Yuri Alberto scored to guide Brazil to a 2-0 win in the first match of the day.
