In the FIFA World Cup 2018 Group C and D matches, Croatia, Denmark, France and Argentina all booked their passage to the round of 16 on Tuesday. France and Denmark drew 1-1 in their Group C match to finish first and second respectively. In the other match of the group, Peru defeated Australia 2-0 to bag their first points of the world cup. Group D meanwhile saw Argentina survive a late scare as they overcame Nigeria 2-1 to finish second in their group with four points. Croatia scored a late winner against Iceland to maintain their 100% winning record and finish on top of the group with nine points.
France V. Denmark gave us the first 0-0 of this world cup. Both the teams played out the most boring match this tournament with nothing at stake for either of them. It was a drab affair that saw both teams sit out for the majority of the match with neither bothering to go ahead and attack. There was no meaningful attack or good chance created by any of the sides to ensure France finished their group unbeaten. They finished on top with 7 points with Denmark following them to the round of 16 with 5 points. In the other match of the group, Peru overcame the Aussies 2-0 with goals from Carrillo and Guerrero in the 18th and 50th minutes to give Peru their first points of the league.
11:30p IST saw one of the most awaited matches of the third round of the group stages kick off. Argentina V. Nigeria was a knock-out match with defeat for either side meaning their elimination from the tournament and qualification for the other. And the match didn’t fail to disappoint. Both sides had a right go at each other with Argentina pulling the first punch through Messi in the 14th minute. The Argentine captain finally stepped up to the pitch after a sublime touch to control the ball by him was rounded off with a fine weaker foot right finish to crash in the back of the net. Falling behind woke up the Nigerians who knew a draw was enough to see them through. Their relentless pressure finally broke a fragile Argentinean defense in the 51st minute with Mascherano giving away a penalty which was coolly slotted home by Chelsea player Victor Moses. Nigeria’s dreams were unfortunately shattered late on though after Rojo scored for Argentina in the 86th minute to help Argentina through to the next round. Croatia on the other and finished top of the group with 3 wins from 3 after they defeated a resolute Iceland side with a late 90th-minute winner by Perisic.
In FIFA World Cup 2018 Group C and D, France and Croatia top their groups in and now let’s see which other teams top in the other groups.
