Four matches were played on Monday in the world cup which saw Group A and Group B complete their round of matches. Uruguay took on home nation Russia in a match to decide who would top the group with Uruguay sealing first place with a 3-0 win. In group B Iran and Portugal faced off in a match to decide who would qualify for the round of 16. Spain and Morocco played the other last match of the group.
We would like to highlight why there has been a shift in timings and the number of matches being played per day from Monday. Two matches are being played at 7:30 pm IST and two matches at 11:30 pm IST. The move has been taken to ensure that each group matches are played simultaneously to prevent teams from gaining an advantage over the other. With both matches in each group being played at the same time, teams will be unaware of the results of the other countries in their group which will ensure fair play.
FIFA World Cup 2018 Groups – This format saw both the matches in group A being played out at 7:30 pm IST. Uruguay V. Russia turned out to be a completely one-sided match with Luis Suarez, Cavani and a Cheryshev own goal sealing a 3-0 rout for Uruguay. Suarez opened the scoring for Uruguay, finding the back of the net from a close range free-kick. Their lead was doubled after Cheryshev scored an own goal. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts after Smolnikov was red carded in the 36th minute to end the match for Russia. Cavani scored in the last minute of the match to take Uruguay top of the group after winning all their matches in which they conceded 0 goals. The other game of the group was a dead rubber but a matter of pride for Saudi Arabia and Egypt. And it was Saudi Arabia who walked out of the tournament with a win under their belt after Dawsari scored in the 5th minute of added time to seal a famous victory for his side and send Egypt back home with no win from the world cup.
Group B was a very intense affair with thrillers being played out in the both the matches. Spain V. Morocco was the stuff of dreams with Morocco edging towards one of their best wins in their history before Aspas scored very late to help Spain to a 2-2 draw and take them top of the group on goals scored. Iran V. Portugal saw Ronaldo’s side being held to a 1-1 draw. It was a match that was decided by VAR with Portugal and Iran both being awarded penalties via VAR. While Ronaldo failed to convert his, Karim scored his late on to level things for Iran who were unlucky to not come out of the match with a win given their immense grit an excellent performance.
