We discuss it all in this article where we bring to you the most comprehensive guide of all the four matches that took part in the quarter-finals.
Friday 6 July
Uruguay 0 France 2
Edinson Cavani’s miss for too much for Uruguay to handle. Leaving them without any spark going forward, the fabled Uruguayan defence was unable to save Uruguay when they took on France in the first quarter-final of this year’s tournament. Goals from defender Varane and a blooper by Muslera to let in a shot by Griezmann was more than enough to see France become the first team to qualify for the last four.
Brazil 1 Belgium 2
The best match of the last 8, Brazil V. Belgium was everything and more we could have hoped for. De Bruyne and Hazard were too hot to handle for the Brazilian side as they were ripped to shreds by the Belgians. An own goal by Fernandinho and a pile driver by De Bruyne into the lower left-hand corner of the goal saw Brazil become the latest favourites to crash out of the tournament, setting up France V. Belgium in the semi-finals. Brazil’s exit also saw South America end its bid in the 2018 world cup.

Sweden 0 England 2
Having impressed everyone this year with their performances in the qualifiers and the tournament, Sweden were looking to kill off another giant after already having ended Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland’s world cup when they took on an England. It was not to be another fairytale finish for them though as they put on their worst performance this world cup. A show that was hardly worthy of a knockout stage performance saw them bid adieu with a 2-0 loss to England.
Russia 2 Croatia 2 (Croatia win 4-3 on penalties)
The last match of the quarter-finals went all the way to the penalty shoot-outs. It was déjà-vu for both the sides who had reached this stage after winning penalty shoot-outs in the round of 16. Resolute, resilient, courageous and the will to never give up is what Russia will be remembered for. The biggest surprise package this year, the hosts were unlucky to exit after poor penalties saw the lose 4-3 in the shootout. Despite the result, the Russians have won our hearts with their showing on football’s biggest stage.
