FIFA World Cup 2018 Round of 16 – Has there ever been a better world cup? Offering so much in the group stages that we were still digesting, the round of 16 hit us with a fresh batch of excitement and nerve racking thrilling finishes that left us mind boggled. Be it Spain getting knocked out, to four matches being decided on penalties, heroics by the goal-keepers, to 19 year old sensation Kylian Mbappé single handily destroying Argentina, the first knockout stages of this year’s world cup were a football lover’s paradise. Truly living up to the billing of being the best world cup in history ever, the round of 6 results have set up some mouth-watering clashes in the quarterfinals, commencing 6th July. Knockout stage – Round of 16 schedule

Saturday, June 30

– Match 50: France 4 – 3 Argentina The first upset of the round of 16 saw Lionel Messi and company depart after PSG and France striker Mbappé blitzed past them with 2 goals and 1 assist.

– Match 49: Uruguay 2 – 1 Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to follow Messi out of the tournament after his side crashed out to Uruguay. Edison Cavani starred for the South Americans with his two stunning goals.

Sunday, July 1

– Match 51: Spain 1 – 1, (3 – 4 PK) Russia One of the favourites to lift the title, Spain ended their campaign after losing on penalties to hosts Russia. The blame game has already begun in Spain with fingers being pointed at the coach, players, Spanish FA and Real Madrid.

– Match 52: Croatia 1 – 1 (3 – 2, PK) Denmark The second match of the day went to penalties too. A day on which keepers on both sides saved three penalties each, Subasic came out on the winning side to help Croatia advance.

Monday, July 2

– Match 53: Brazil 2 – 0 Mexico A pretty straightforward match for Brazil saw them cruise past Mexico on the back of a convincing performance.

– Match 54: Belgium 3 – 2 Japan One of the best matches the round of 16 offered us was Belgium V. Japan. A full out attacking match saw 5 goals being scored, with Belgium clawing back from a 2-0 deficit to score the winner in the 93rd minute. Despite losing in such fashion, the Japanese players and supporters won hearts world over with not only their performance on the pitch but off it too; staying long after the match had ended to clean the stadium and their dressing room.

Tuesday, July 3

– Match 55: Sweden 1- 0 Switzerland Sweden who have quietly found their way into the quarterfinals are a force to reckon with. Their win over Switzerland showed their defensive resolute and organisation.

– Match 56: Colombia 1-1 England (3-4 on penalties) Colombia took England all the way only to suffer heartbreak in the penalties after England professionally slotted home their penalties.
