FIH 2018 Hockey Stars Awards: Taking a Look at the Players
With voting officially open from today for the FIH 2018 Hockey Stars Awards, we take a look at all the awards on the stake and the players nominated in each prestigious category. The FIH 2018 Hockey Stars Awards are the International Hockey Federation’s coveted year-end awards which feature the player of the year trophies in the men’s and women’s category among a total of 5 awards that are presented to the winners on February 14 every year.
Dominating this year’s list of nominees for men are players from the final of the recently concluded FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup held in India. A total of three players from the Netherlands and Belgium make to the final five men short-listed for the men’s player of the year award. Meanwhile, for women, it’s the Netherlands who are on top once again with three players from the country dominating the list alongside Spanish and New Zealand representation.

The glistening ceremony will also see the best player between the sticks walk away with the FIH goal-keeper of the year award. The event will also recognize the best upcoming young talent with the rising star of the year title.
FIH 2018 Hockey Stars Awards:
There are five Awards at play:
- FIH Player of the Year (Man and Woman): annual award for the best men’s and women’s player in international hockey in a given calendar year as determined by a peer and public vote
- FIH Goalkeeper of the Year (Man and Woman): annual award for the best men’s and women’s goalkeeper in international hockey in a given calendar year as determined by a peer and public vote
- FIH Rising Star of the Year (Man and Woman): annual award for the best men’s and women’s young player (Under 23) in international hockey in a given calendar year as determined by a peer and public vote
- FIH Coach of the Year (Man and Woman): annual award for the best male and female coach in international hockey in a given calendar year as determined by an FIH panel
- FIH Umpire of the Year (Man and Woman): annual award recognizing the best male and female umpires in international hockey in a given calendar year as determined by the FIH Officials Committee
