Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu scaled a new height in her career after she broke into the top 10 of the Forbes Highest Paid Female Athletes list. The badminton player ranked in at seventh on the list despite a not so good year by her on the court. 2018 has till now seen India’s best female player reach a plethora of finals without tasting success in them.
Despite failing to live upto her standards in the game, Sindhu’s marketability has grown leaps and bounds. Her fame and recognition has grown over the years owing to her previous success which has seen her rake up titles by defeating some of the top names in the game.
The second-ranked shuttler has landed herself some of the biggest brand endorsements in India which have seen her earn a sweet 8 million dollars per year. This coupled with her on-field earnings of 500, 00 million dollars put her total earning at 8.5 million dollars, a massive amount for a badminton player. She is currently playing in the Asian Games where she is enjoying a good run, having won all her matches till now.
Sindhu’s feat is also extra special given that no other badminton player makes the top 10 in the Forbes’ Highest Paid Female Athletes list, dominated by tennis stars sees USA’s Serena Williams retain her top spot with mammoth $18.1 million earnings. Despite returning to the sport only this year following the birth of her child, Williams impressive endorsement portfolio which sees her take home $18 million has ensured that she stays top of the pile. She is followed by her compatriots Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens.
Forbes had earlier in June issued a list of the highest paid athletes with not even a single woman player featuring in the top 100. We hope come 2019, the trend buckles and women stars feature heavily in the list.
