The much revered Forbes list of the world’s highest paid athletes 2018 was released with good news coming in for India. Indian cricket team and World No.1 batsman Virat Kohli featured on the list ahead of some of the biggest names in the international sporting arena. He piped the likes of Argentina and Manchester City football star Sergio Aguero and Novak Djokovic to come 83rd on the list with early earnings of USD 24 million. Boxer Floyd Mayweather topped the list after his successful win over Connor McGregor. Football superstar Lionel Messi overtook Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest earning footballer in the world, coming second on the list with Ronaldo taking the third spot. The rest of the top 5 were completed by MMA fighter McGregor and footballer Neymar. Surprisingly enough the top 100 was an all male affair with no women athlete finding their name in the top 100.
The Forbes list of the world’s highest paid athletes 2018 is topped by 41-year-old Mayweather, with USD 285 million earnings. His ranking is a huge testament to his immense fame and success as despite playing just one professional match in the last year, his endorsements and other professional duties saw him top the list, nearly 200 million ahead of his next competitor.
Indian Virat Kohli did the country proud, rounding off a successful year for himself and the country with a place on the Forbes list of the world’s highest paid athletes 2018.
This year the Indian national cricket board ‘The Board of Control for Cricket in India’ named Kohli as one of just five players to receive the newly-created A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual retainer of more than USD 1 million.”Yet like the Indian cricket mega-stars who have come before him, Kohli’s big payday comes off the pitch” where he’s partnered with top brands such as Puma, Pepsi, Audi and Oakley, Forbes said.
