Wet, pouring, soaking wet and drenched. The Luzhniki Stadium was covered under heavy rainfall on Sunday which despite trying its best to dampen the spirits of the tens of thousands who had made their way to watch the final of the FIFA world cup, failed in its goal as football won on the day, shining brighter than the sun. A final fully worthy to wrap up the biggest event in world football was played out in Moscow between France and Croatia. Croatia, who had punched above their weight, fighting all odds throughout the tournament to win our hearts, stumbled at the final hurdle, going down 4-2 to France in the final. A match where France’s class and experience preserved to outshine Croatia, saw the country lift their second world cup after 20 years. And they did it under the guidance of their coach Didier Deschamps, the same man who had captained France to their first ever world cup in 1998.
Before we get to the main show, the world cup was wrapped up by its closing ceremony which saw Will Smith take centre stage. Era Istrefi, Nicky Jam joined him to be the top performers at Luzhniki stadium in Moscow to enthrall the spectators before the main course got underway. The ceremony saw these stars perform the official song live it up along with the official mascot of FIFA Zabivakaperforming as well. Although the closing ceremony was better than the opening one, it had nothing to write home about. Who can complain though when the final gave us everything we had hoped for.
France wins FIFA World Cup Final – match highlights
As the two teams stepped out on the pitch for the last time this world cup accompanied by their countries flags, singing their national anthems with great pride and gusto, the magnanimity of the occasion started becoming clearer. For a country of just 4.2 million, the final of the world cup was one of the biggest occasion in their history. And on the other side, France’s golden generation was looking to finally come off age. And despite all the palpable tension running through the players with football’s biggest prize at stake, the teams did not sit back in their quest to lift the title. It was an attacking match, a perfect finale for the best world cup in history.
Croatia started well, pegging back the French, hogging the ball and making the most of their possession, creating chance after chance under wet conditions. However, it was just not their day with lady luck siding with France. Mandzukic was unlucky to head in an own goal to give France the lead in football’s biggest match. That did not hamper the Croatian’s spirits who have been known this world cup for their strength to keep pushing against the tide. Perisic struck home a sweet volley to equalise before the first VAR decision at the world cup final saw France being awarded a controversial penalty which Griezmann converted to send France into the half at 2-1. The second half saw the same score-line despite Croatia having 14 shots at goal. Pogba and golden body Mbappé scored to ma it 4-1 before a blooper by Lloris saw Mandzukic get a worthy goal back for Croatia who despite all their efforts and undying spirit went down 4-2.
