The French Open came to an end with the obvious happening. The King of Clay Rafael Nadal won another French Open after defeating Dominic Thiem in straight sets in the final. Apart from the first set, the final was a disappointment with Nadal’s might proving too much for the Austrian who was unable to give Nadal any sort of challenge. With almost everyone knowing the result well before the match started, Thiem started with good intent looking to make the most of his time on the biggest stage in tennis. His first grand slam final went his way as Thiem won the opening rallies much to the wonder of a celebrity filled crowd. However you can only tame a lion for so long. And Nadal showed that as he fought back, putting on show a vintage performance. Quick returns, super fast serves which saw him break early on and a huge array of shots ensured that Nadal went onto win the first set 6-4. The next two sets were much simpler for the Spanish, going 6-3 and 6-2 in his favour. Despite suffering cramps in the last set, Nadal’s intensity only increased as his eyes and body yearned for his 11th French Open title.

“It’s a dream to win 11 times,” Nadal said.

 

“It was important to play the way I did. It was a tough moment when I got cramp. He is a player who pushes you to the limit.”

The win meant that the last six grand slams have been shared between Nadal and Federer. The duo have dominated tennis in recent time, with Federer sitting on 20 grand slams while Nadal is on 17.

World No.1 Simona Halep won the women’s final 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 against Sloane Stephens. Losing three back to back grand slam finals, Halep finally overcame her unlucky streak to lift the French Open title with a superb performance. Her and Nadal’s win meant that for the first time since 1961 both the top seeds in the French Open ended up lifting the title.
