French Open 2018 match highlights:
- PV Sindhu progressed to the second with a 21-17, 21-8 win
- This was her first win against Beiwen Zhang in four matches. She had lost to the American in the Denmark Open this month.
- Srikanth and Nehwal play their matches on Wednesday.
PV Sindhu ended her three matches losing streak against Beiwen Zhang with a first round win against the American at the French Open 2018. Making up for her disappointing loss against the American in the Denmark Open, Sindhu took just 34 minutes to dispatch her opponent in the BWF Super Tour 750 tournament in Paris.
Given a tricky fixture in her opening match of the French Open itself, Sindhu knew things wouldn’t be easy against Zhang. Fresh from the wounds of her latest defeat against Zhang, Sindhu exacted revenge in style, winning in straight sets in a comfortable victory for her.
In a replay of her match against Zhang in the Denmark Open, Sindhu started the match on the front foot, quickly finding her feet in the match. She took no time in getting to a 7-4 lead, using the score advantage to capitalise to a 10-6 lead come the first break of the match.
Zhang was in no mood to hand over the match though, hitting back strongly. The American player who plays as an independent, without the use of coaches in international matches, kept snapping at Sindhu’s feet and stayed close to the Indian till 16-15. Using her half-smashes to her advantage, Zhang ensured that Sindhu was kept on the edge throughout the first game.
The World No.2 Indian however finally steered clear once again in the set, producing a five point burst to race to a 20-15 lead. Despite saving two game points, Zhang faltered to lose 21-17.
Using her momentum, Sindhu was in full flow in the second set, decapitating an erratic Zhang. Giving no room for her rival to recover, Sindhu scored seven consecutive points from 3-3 to reach 10-3 and ultimately take the set and with it the game 21-8.
Fellow Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth play their first round matches in the French Open against Saena Kawakami of Japan and Wong Wing Ki Vicent of Hong Kong respectively on Wednesday.
