Gion Matsuri (festival) is an annual festival in Japan which goes on for about a month.
Festival emerged as part of purification ritual to please gods. It is observed in the Kyoto region where every night leads up to massive parades. These nights are called Yoiyama. The streets are lined up with beautiful stalls selling Taiyaki, Yukata, yakitori (famous Japanese delicacies). The series of events throughout the month include an opening ceremony, lottery for the parade order, Former parade, cleaning of Mikoshi (divine palanquin) by sacred water, latter parade and Closing Ceremony.
