The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, who played a pivotal role in India’s Independence struggle. Lala Lajpat Rai was an activist during India’s Independence years. He was also known as Punjab Kesari by his supporters and followers. Lala Lajpat Rai was one of the three members of the Lal Bal Pal group and he also worked closely with the Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company during the initial stages of the two.

Lala Lajpat Rai Early Life & Education
Lala Lajpat Rai was born on 28th January in 1865 in Ludhiana’s Dhudike district, which is now a part of Punjab, and was born in an Agarwal Jain family to Munshi Radha Krishna Agarwal and Gulab Devi. Lala Lajpat Rai’s father was a school teacher mastering Urdu and Persian languages. It is believed that Lala Lajpat Rai spent most of his youth at Jagraon in Ludhiana. Lala Ji even built a house in Jagraon and the house built by him still stands there housing a library and a museum.

Lala Lajpat Rai did most of his initial schooling from a Government Higher Secondary school in the Rewari district of Punjab because of his father’s job, however, in the 1880s he moved to Lahore and studied law in the Government College. It was during his time in Lahore that he came in touch with freedom fighters and he also started believing in the Hindu reformist movement which was started by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Lala Lajpat Rai went ahead and joined Arya Samaj in Lahore.
Lala Lajpat Rai Career and His Entry into Politics
Lala Lajpat Rai started practising law in 1886 and until 1914, he practised law in several parts of the country. It was only after 1914 that he dedicated himself completely to India’s Independence movement and joined the Indian National Congress. During his political career, Lala Lajpat Rai founded a non-profit welfare organisation, namely Servants of the People Society. He also advocated the rights of the lower caste, and approved that people from lower castes should be allowed to read Vedas and recite mantras.
He believed that the Hindu society needed to fight some evil that was present within, including the caste system that created differences. Lala Rai also led the protest against Simon Commission, and it was during this incident that the Indian Independence activist suffered severe injuries. It is believed that Lala Rai never recovered from the injuries he sustained after the protest, and that ultimately led to his death on 17th November in 1928.
