Its main center was in Wardha, Maharashtra while the heads of this committee included popular people like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, and Acharya Narendra Dev.

- In 1918, Gandhiji, in Hindi LiteratureConference, called Hindi as the language of the people.
- On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly unanimously decided to vote Hindi to be the official language of India.
- With the Indian Constitution coming into force on the 26th of January 1950, the Official Language Policy came into force. Under Article 343 (1) of the Constitution, it was clarified that the official language of India would be Hindi.
- It was Jawarharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country who said that the Hindi Day should be celebrated on 14 September every year, given the importance of this day.
- The first Hindi day in India was celebrated on 14 September 1953.
- On 26 January 1965, a resolution was passed in the Parliament to use the Hindi language in all government functions, but at the same time, English would also be used as a co-official language.
