While most of the names from this awardee list who have made a remarkable mark in their field are known to most of the people, there were some who were relatively unknown. One such person was Harekala Hajabba. Harekala Hajabba is an orange vendor who hails from the state of Karnataka. But how come an orange vendor receives one of the Highest Civilian awards Padma Shri? Harekala Hajabba is a 66-year-old orange vendor who hails from the state of Karnataka who brought a revolution in the rural education sector. Harekala Hajabba did not receive any formal education but he managed to open a school in the Harekala village of Mangaluru. The school was formed two decades after Harekala Hajabba realized the need for formal education which has been missing from their village. A former MLA sanctioned the land for construction in the year 2000. The school in the Harekala-Newpadpu village currently has 175 underprivileged kids studying there and according to his interview, Harekala Hajabba is currently planning to open more schools. He also spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind to introduce means of higher education in the village.

What inspired Harekala Hajabba to open a school in his village
Harekala Hajabba in his interview also revealed how he was unable to help a foreigner once because of his lack of knowledge in the English and Hindi languages. It is only after that Harekala Hajabba realised that the Harekala-Newpadpu village in Karnataka’s Mangaluru needs means of formal education, following which he brought a revolution in the rural education sector of his village. Harekala Hajabba invested all of his life’s savings in the construction of the school to ensure that no underprivileged kid has to suffer like him. He was named as one of the recipients by the Government of India in 2020 for his exemplary work in the field of social work. Harekala Hajabba has won many awards over the years which have recognized his efforts in ensuring that the children in his village are not deprived off of their Right to Education. After winning several awards, Harekala Hajabba decided to open more schools in the Harekala-Newpadpu village in Karnataka’s Mangalore.
