Harivansh Narayan Singh has been elected as new Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha 2018. In another boost to the BJP led NDA government ahead of the upcoming general elections in 2019, their backed candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as the new Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha 2018 on Thursday. In a show of strength and unity among numbers, the BJP with its allies and other parties garnered 125 votes as opposed to the 105 by the UPA.
With the retirement of Congress’ PJ Kurein back on July 1, the seat of the deputy chairman had become empty leading to a need for the voting to be held. And the BJP used these elections as a perfect tool to not only show the majority they hold in the Rajya Sabha but also as a confidence building measure for their party members and allies. The BJP’s win means another dent in an already faltering opposition with their unity breaking with each passing defeat.
After the BJP swept the no confidence vote in the Lok Sabha a few weeks back, the UPA needed to win the deputy chairman elections at any cost. For the Congress a victory now was needed more than ever. After losing face in the no confidence motion with Rahul Gandhi embarrassing himself and the Prime Minster Narendra Modi decimating the opposition based on facts, figures and statistics, cracks had begun appearing in what was supposed to be an united front against the NDA. However the BJP ensured that it was another shameful defeat for the Congress lead alliance.
The BJP boast of immense political acumen and knowledge of the current situation and that was shown once again by them. By supporting Nitish Kumar and his party’s candidature for the post, the BJP played a masterstroke in not only ensuring the faith of Nitish Kumar but also of their other present and future allies. It was a move taken with foresight in mind. One that ensured smaller parties and allies in the NDA and outside it that the BJP gives equal respect and importance in all decisions to their each and every ally.
This step by the BJP proved to be decisive in ensuring their victory. They got the backing of not only the BJD and TRS but also of the Shiv Sena who had left the BJP in the cold during the no confidence motion. With the AAP refusing to support the Congress, the UPA knew defeat was all but imminent and that their bid for the post was only a token one.
Things ended up panning exactly as the BJP had imagined with 125 votes in their favour to ensure Harivansh Narayan Singh took the role of the new Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha 2018.
