Hattrick in Cricket World Cup – Achieving a Hat-trick not only is significant for the bowlers to get itched in history but also to take their team to a confident position. And, to get the milestone in the ICC Cricket World cup makes it all the more memorable. The history of the ICC cricket world cup has witnessed nine hattricks till date with the first one coming in the year 1987 – a year which put India in the pedestal of world cricket for hosting its first World Cup. Chetan Sharma (India) Vs. New Zealand (1987)
Chetan Sharma was the first bowler to take first ever world cup hat-trick in the year 1987 against New Zealand. The glory came in the final group game against New Zealand in Nagpur when Jeff Crowe, the New Zealand skipper had decided to bat and the team were comfortably placed at 182/5 after 41 overs. Indian Captain Kapil Dev brought Chetan Sharma as a surprise package after the fall of Dipak Patel and he did not disappoint his skipper. He went on to claim the first hat-trick of the world cup by claiming the wickets of Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith, and Ewen Chatfield – all three clean bowled by him.

Saqlain Mushtaq (Pakistan) Vs. Zimbabwe (1999)
The 1999 edition of the world cup saw another history made when Saqlain Mushtaq claimed the first hat-trick for Pakistan in the world cup against Zimbabwe. He is also the first spinner to take a hat-trick in the world cup. Henry Olonga tried to hoick the ball thereby getting stumped and Saqlain replicated his next ball to get rid of Adam Huckle before trapping Pommie Mbangwa LBW to claim his hat-trick.
Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka) Vs. Bangladesh (2003)
Chaminda Vaas still holds the record for taking a hat-trick on the first three balls of the innings after Bangladesh took to bat. The feat came at Pietermaritzburg when he bowled out Hannan Sarkar with a clean inswinger. Mohammad Ashraful could not read the slower delivery next up and created an easy caught and bowled chance for Vaas before Ehsanul Haque edged the third ball to Jayawardene in the slips to hand Vaas his first hat-trick.

Brett Lee (Australia) Vs Kenya (2003)
The 2003 ICC Cricket World cup saw its second hat-trick when Brett Lee spitfire with his balls against Kenya. In the fourth over the match, Brett Lee ripped the top order of Kenya by first trapping Kennedy Otieno who played the ball on the stumps before Brijal Patel nicked the very next delivery to Ricky Ponting at second slip. David Obuya, the next batsman in, couldn’t stop a fiery 96.6mph Yorker to crash onto his stumps in the process to offer Brett Lee and Australia their first world cup hat-trick.

Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) vs. South Africa (2007)
Lasith Malinga is the only bowler to have taken two hat-tricks in the ICC Cricket world cup with his first one coming against South Africa in 2007 world cup in the Caribbean. The match was at a crucial juncture with SA requiring 4 runs with 5 wickets in hand. The brutal spell came in at a much required time when he outfoxed Shaun Pollock with a slower ball. He replicated his next delivery to catch Andrew Hall who scooted the delivery to the covers before coming back in the next over the get rid of Jacques Kallis caught behind for his well-made 86 to secure his hat-trick. He went on to get the fourth straight wicket by bowling Makhaya Ntini out but couldn’t get his team through.

Kemar Roach (West Indies )Vs Netherlands (2011)
The next edition of the world cup also saw two hat-tricks being bowled with the first one coming from Kemar Roach against the Netherlands and becoming the first West Indian to achieve a hat-trick in the process as well. Chasing an uphill score of 331, Netherlands were tottering at 115 for seven when Roach was introduced. He trapped Pieter Seelaar for 1 before trumping Bernard Loots LBW. He secured the match by bowling out Berend Westdijk’s middle stump and achieving the first hat-trick.
Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) Vs. Kenya (2011)
The second hat-trick of 2011 edition and Malinga came against Kenya when he trapped Tanmay Mishra leg before wicket on the last ball of the over. He came back in the next over to clean Peter Ongondo’s stumps on first and Shem Ngoche on the second ball with identical Yorkers to claim the second hat-trick.

Steven Finn (England) Vs Australia (2015)
The next edition of the world cup also saw two hat-tricks being bowled as well with the first one coming from Steven Finn against Australia thereby becoming the first English cricketer to take a hat-trick. His hat-trick came in the final overs when he got Brad Haddin caught in the deep by Stuart Broad. Glen Maxwell was the second victim who was caught by Joe Root before Mitchel Johnson holed out to James Anderson at Mid-off to hand Finn his first hat-trick.
JP Duminy (South Africa) Vs Sri Lanka (2015)
JP Duminy secured the first hat-trick for South Africa in the world cup in the quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Sydney. Angelo Matthews was the first to walk after hoicking and getting caught at Mid-wicket. Nuwan Kulasekara was the next to edge out to QDK before trapping Tharindu Kaushal LBW to become the first South African bowler to take a hat-trick in the ICC cricket world cup.
Mohammad M Shami (India) Vs Afghanistan (2019)
Mohammad M Shami is the second Indian to have scored a hat-trick in the Cricket World Cup. He clinched an 11 run win against Afghanistan. While Shami bowled in the second last over of the game, on his third delivery of the over, Nami was caught out by Pandaya. Later, the other two batsmen, Aftab Alam, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were clean bowled by Shami serving his name for India’s second world cup hat-trick ever.
Trent Boult (New Zealand) Vs Australia (2019)
Trent Boult is the first New Zealand bowler to have scored a hattrick in the Cricket World Cup and that too against Australia. In the match, Boult clean bowled Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc while Jason Behrendorff was out due to LBW. These three wickets were taken by Trent Boult back to back giving him his first world cup hat-trick.
