Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease which is caused by the dengue virus. The symptoms of dengue fever are seen after three to fourteen days of infection. Recovery from dengue takes almost two to seven days. In some cases, the disease turns into severe dengue known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage.

Dengue is spread by the species of female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti type. The virus is of five types; infection with one type that gives lifelong immunity to that type, but only short-term immunity to the others. Dengue has become a global problem since World War II and is common in more than 110 countries, mostly in Asia and South America.

Dengue Fever Symptoms – Warning signs of dengue fever rash

Here are some dengue symptoms in children and in adults which begin four to six days after infection and can last for up to 10 or more days.

  • Sudden high fever
  • Serious headaches
  • Nausea
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rash
  • Mild bleeding (nose bleed, bleeding gums, or easy bruising)

Sometimes, symptoms are mild and can be mistaken with flu or viral. A person infected with dengue can face fever, damage to lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlargement of the liver, and disturbance in the circulatory system. The symptoms may advance to massive bleeding, shock, and death. This is called dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

There is no specific medicine or remedy to treat dengue infection. If you think you may have dengue fever, you should immediately visit a doctor and get the required tests done. Do not ignore the fever and self-medicate. You need to take proper rest, take medicines on time and most important – drink plenty of fluids.

How to protect yourself from dengue/ dengue fever prevention

  • Use mosquito coils/ spray/ repellents, outside and indoors.
  • Keep your window and doors closed as far as possible.
  • Try to use mosquito nets while sleeping.
  • To reduce the mosquito population, clean your surroundings. Clean the areas where mosquitoes can breed. These include old tires, holes, buckets, mugs, utensils, etc. that can collect rainwater. Change the water in outdoor bird baths and pets regularly.
  • Regularly clean under the plant pots.
  • Avoid keeping water collecting plates under the flower vases/pots. The water collected in these can easily turn into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • When outdoors, wear full-sleeved shirts and full of socks.
  • Get rid of standing water.

  • Papaya Leaves and seeds: Many researchers have found that papaya leaves play a crucial role in fighting the dengue virus.
  • Pomegranates: Pomegranates are loaded with a lot of essential minerals and nutrients, this fruit gives the body a lot of energy.
  • Coconut Water: Dengue results in dehydration. Thus, it is beneficial to consume coconut water – which is loaded with electrolytes and vital nutrients.
  • Turmeric: Being an antiseptic and metabolism booster, consumption of turmeric with milk is very beneficial.
  • Orange: Orange and its juice are rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, it helps in treating and eliminating the dengue virus.

What to avoid: Say no to oily and spicy food for at least 7 days. Also, consume food items that are easy to digest. Stay away from non-vegetarian food.
