Monkeypox Virus – Monkeypox: What is it?
Monkeypox is a rare virus that is spread by wild animals, especially in West and Central Africa. This virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxvirdae. Viruses such as smallpox, cowpox, horsepox, etc., are related to this virus.
The Monkeypox virus has two clades: the Congo Basin clade and the West African clade. However, the Congo Basin clade is more transmissible.

Monkeypox Virus – Monkeypox Symptoms
The Monkeypox symptoms may start to appear between 6-13 days after contracting the Monkeypox virus.
During the invasion period, which is the first 5 days of the infection, the individual may experience following Monkeypox symptoms:
- Fever
- Intense Headache
- Lymph Mode Swelling
- Back Pain
- Muscle Pain
- Lack of Energy
After 1-3 days of fever, skin rashes start to appear especially on face, palms, feet, etc.
Monkeypox Risk Factors
According to WHO, Monkeypox is a self-limited disease and the severity of the virus depends on:
- Age
- Exposure
- Patient Health
However, young children are more prone to the Monkeypox virus. The fatality rate has varied between 0 – 11 per cent in previous outbreaks.
Monkeypox Virus – Monkeypox Transmission
The Monkeypox virus is transmitted from wild animals to human beings. It can be transferred through bites, scratches, respiratory route, etc.

However, it can also be transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person. It can be transferred through contact with lesions, bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, contaminated areas, etc. But the transmission rate between humans is very low and has accounted for 10-30 percent.
Monkeypox Origin
Monkeypox was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1996-97. However, the largest outbreak was recorded in Nigeria in 2017.
Monkeypox Treatment
As of now, no particular Monkeypox treatment has been determined. There is no particular Monkeypox vaccine. However, to control the Monkeypox virus, the smallpox vaccine, antivirals, and VIG are used.
Currently, one case of Monkeypox in the UK has been determined. No case of Monkeypox in India has been determined recently.
