Highest Wicket Takers in T20 Cricket – Many people believe that T20 Cricket is more suited for the batsmen but the bowlers have done well in the shortest format of the game too. The bowlers have been successful in picking up wickets and have also provided much needed breakthroughs for their respective teams.

Today we bring to you the bowlers who have dominated the T20 format. The bowlers are majorly from Sri Lanka and Pakistan. There are no bowlers from England, Australia, West Indies, South Africa or India to have dominated the T20.

Shahid Afridi

The ex-cricketer and the former captain of Pakistan, Shahid Afridi holds this record. He is the highest wicket for Pakistan in the shortest format of the game. He served his nation from the year 2006 to 2018. Afridi is the best all-rounder that Pakistan ever had. In T20 Internationals, he took 98 Wickets to his name. Shahid played 99 T20I matches for Pakistan in which he took 98 wickets to his name. This is the highest number of wickets taken in T20 Internationals.

Lasith Malinga


Malinga recently retired from international cricket. He served his nation from 2006 to 2019. He was the captain of Sri Lanka when the Lankan Tigers won the World T20 in Bangladesh. He is an ace pacer and has taken 97 Wickets in T20Is from just 73 matches. He also has one fifer in the shortest format of Cricket.

Bangladesh’s premier all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan also features in this list. He has been an integral part of the Bangladesh cricket team. He made his T20I debut in 2006 and is still serving his nation with his all-round skills. Shakib has taken 88 Wickets from 72 T20 International matches. He also has a 5 wicket haul to his name.

Umar Gul

Pakistani Pacer, Umar Gul was once a major threat to the opposition. But, his inconsistent form and the rise of youngsters in the Pakistani team didn’t allow him to be the go-to man for his country. He has been instrumental in Pakistan’s World T20 triumph. Although India won the match, it was because of Umar that Pakistan reached the final of that World T20 in 2007 in South Africa. Gul served Pakistan from 2007 to 2016.  He took 85 Wickets to his name from 60 matches and took 2 five-wicket hauls in his T20I career.

Ajmal served his country from 2009 to 2015.  He has picked up 85 Wickets from 64 T20I matches and has played a major role in many wins for Pakistan.

Rashid Khan

A key player for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League was Rashid Khan. He has bowled magnificent spells for SRH’s victories. Rashid has played well for Afghanistan too. He made his T20 International debut in 2015 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. He took 75 Wickets to his name from just 38 matches and is still a threat to many batsmen. Even though he was taken for many runs in the world cup 2019 but, one should rule Rashid Khan out on their own risk. He has bagged 2 five-wicket hauls in T20 Internationals which says a lot about his skills.

Nabi is a brilliant allrounder for Afghanistan. Mohd Nabi was the former captain of Afghanistan. He made his T20 International debut in 2010 against Ireland at Colombo. In 2019, Nabi was the go-to man for Afghanistan. He has picked up 69 Wickets from 68 matches. Nabi has also scored more than 1000 runs in the T20 Internationals and is a handy player who can turn the game with both his spin and with the bat.

Tim Southee

Tim is the only player from New Zealand to feature on this list. Tim Southee made his T20 International debut in 2008. He played his first T20I game against England at Auckland. The Kiwi pacer has played 58 T20Is till now and has bagged 67 Wickets to his name. Southee is the best new-ball bowlers alongside Shane Bond, Trent Boult, and many other Kiwi bowlers. In T20Is, Southee has picked up 1 fifer to his name.

Ajantha Mendis

Ajantha was a premier Sri Lankan bowler once. He single-handedly gave Sri Lanka the Asia Cup title. In the final of the Asia Cup, he bundled out India for a low score. In the test series too, Ajantha Mendis helped Sri Lanka in winning the series against India at home. But now he is not under the scheme of things for Sri Lanka. He has taken the highest number of wickets for Sri Lanka in the T20Is. Ajantha made his T20 debut in 2008 and has picked up 66 Wickets in just 39 matches. He also bagged 2 wickets haul in the shortest format. Sri Lanka must take him into consideration for the 2020 World T20 team.

Nuwan Kulasekara

Nuwan recently retired from International cricket with Lasith Malinga. He was the best Sri Lankan pacer and was also the number one in the ODI rankings. He played well for Sri Lanka across all the formats. Kulasekara made his T20 International debut in 2008 and his last T20I match was in 2017. He played 58 T20 International matches and picked up 66 Wickets to his name. He was a good new-ball bowler who constantly provided the wickets at the start.
