India continued their fine run in the Hockey champions League on Sunday after they shocked world No, 1 Argentina 2-1 to retain their top position in the standings. After having trashed old foes Pakistan by 4-0 in their opening match of the tournament, India pulled off a fine coup against the best side in the world to bag home a vital victory for themselves. The win means India are unbeaten in the tournament after two matches.
With the scars of the Hockey world League final semi-final loss against Argentina still fresh in the minds of the Indian players, the Indian team took to the pitch looking to avenge that defeat. And they pulled off one of the biggest upset of the tournament after they managed to beat Olympic champions Argentina by a one goal margin.
Both teams went into the match having won their first match. India V. Pakistan had seen India belt Pakistan 4-0 with goals from Ramandeep Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Lalit Upadhyay to outclass Pakistan at Breda in Netherlands. Argentina had meanwhile defeated home side Netherlands to ensure a winning start for themselves. With two of the tournament favourites squaring off against each other, viewers were treated to a fine match of hockey on Sunday, one that saw an ultimate battle of tactics and strategy being played both on and off the field.
A tightly contested first quarter set the tone for what was to follow in the coming three quarters. Despite Argentina winning three penalty corners in the opening quarter, India defended resolutely to ensure that scores remained levelled before opening the scoring themselves in the second quarter. They converted their first PC of the game just two minutes into the second half after Casella fouled Harampreet Singh. Singh not only won the PC but also ended up converting it to give India the crucial lead. That was doubled by Mandeep Singh to give India the much needed cushion which allowed them to play out the remainder of the match according to their will. Despite Argentina going hammer and tongs from there on, they could only manage one in reply via Peillat to go down 2-1.
