ICC CWC 2019: Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka 7th Match Prediction Preview

ICC CWC Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka 7th Match Prediction Preview – It has only been one match but the ground beneath the Sri Lankan team management seems to have eloped given under how much pressure they have been. Though Afghanistan can be considered a sub-par team given their experience at this stage, they can simply not be signed off as a lesser competitor. Afghanistan would love to get their first win in the World cup stage while the Sri Lankan team would have the tough task to tame the spirited Afghan side.

The Sri Lankan side’s problem lies not only in reading and furthering their game plan but also at the fundamental levels. A country which has produced some of the gems of Cricket has been finding it hard to replace players with calibre in the domestic circuit. That being said, the selected players have not shown the will to stay in the pitch and let the bat do the talking. Sometimes the callous approach coupled with over aggression has let the match slip away from their hands. Not only this, but also the bowling seems to be all over the park. As said earlier, the team needs to revamp from top to the bottom.

The opening barring that of Karunaratne who became the second player in the history of World Cup to carry his bat to the inning doesn’t look in shape. Lahiru Thirimanne’s temptation of playing lucrative shots has sometimes cost him his crucial wickets as well. Before the start of the next match, he must respect the cost of his wicket and play some waiting game as well. His inputs with that of his captain might make up for his failures. Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis too would want to start from where he left in his last inning. While the later got out without disturbing the scorers, the former showed some signs of setting in. It was his innings which showed promise but he could not convert the start to a big inning which he must be lamenting.

The Middle order too seems out of place Mendis, Dananjaya De Silva and Mathews scoring only 4 runs between them. Jeevan Mendis too did not show any form of applicability and hence the team got dismissed easily. These four players will look to play positive cricket once they take the field against Afghanistan. All of these players play spin well and the stronghold of Afghanistan lies in spin bowling which would make for a mouth-watering contest as well. It would also be important how Mathews approaches this inning given he is the best in the team to tackle quality spin bowling. While he should be the one batting throughout the match, the other players including Thisara Perera would like to up the ante with some aggressive batting. He looked in touch against New Zealand but failed to capitalize on a very good start which must have bothered him.

The bowling looks untidy as well, none of the bowlers were able to find the much-required seam movement. When you come to this part of the world, the swing arsenal becomes pretty important, something which was missing a lot in the Sri Lankan team. Of course, they would want to look at it because the Afghan batters would love to exploit it. the spin department too would love to pick up from where they have left.

As for the Afghanistan team, the problems do not seem to be aplenty. Though they did lose a match against Australia, their morale would still be high given how wonderful they still were in the batting and the bowling departments. Though they could not get a start as they wanted, given that both of their openers departed for zero, but they would still take a lot of heart from the performance of two of their batters in Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran. They were up to the task with their shots and run-ups and they would take their performances with both hands. The captain Gulabdin Naib looked impressive with the bat as well but could not convert a good start into something formidable.
