Early in the day, the talk in the town was how the Pakistani batsmen would be put to test by some fiery short pitch bowling by England and especially by Archer. Mark Wood was inducted in place of Plunkett who is good in taking wickets in the middle overs. The talk also revolved around how England has prepared a bouncy track to unsettle the two left-arm openers. However, none of the above-mentioned plans were able to take shape when the Pakistani side was called on to bat.

The openers came out in the winter sun and tried to tackle the short deliveries by Archer and swinging full deliveries by Woakes. They, however, tried to wait for the storm out till the pitch stopped assisting. Then came out the special shots by Fakhar Zaman to all parts of the ground thereby dismantling the confidence of Woakes. Archer was hit down the ground with mid-off standing inside the circle. The very next ball was hit wide of the square leg for another four. The propriety of Archer had been thwarted by and large. The whacking, pulling and timing was so perfect from the two young openers that England had to force spin in the form of Moeen Ali in the eighth over itself as the first bowling change.

Babar Azam and Imam ul Haq added some quick runs for the second wicket but a subtle bowling change by Morgan saw Imam launching one only to find Woakes in the deep. The third wicket saw one of the best phases of the game when Babar Azam and Hafeez were engrossed in an 88-run partnership in which both the batsmen scampered to their individual fifties. Both Babar Azam and Hafeez found Woakes in deep who had a field day taking four catches and becoming the only fielder in England to take four catches in a world cup match.

Another fifty from captain Sarfaraz who was looking weary in the previous match and some hits from Shadab Khan down the line ensured that Pakistan posted a huge total of 349 runs.

It was never going to be easy for England to push for this chase given three of the pressure situations. The score of 300 plus is always a pressure situation with an added pressure of a world cup match. The pressure gets multiplied by three when you yourself are the host of such tournament. In all of these conditions, England was certain of pulling the chase but could not do so.

Like South Africa, Pakistan too started off with spin with Shadab Khan. It paid off immediately as he caught Jason Roy in front of the stumps for a score of 8. He had a bad timing at the field and his batting too was looking out of sorts. Bairstow tried playing some shorts but could not get going. He eventually nicked one back to Sarfaraz off Wahab Riaz who had miscued the previous delivery.

Root was provided with a dropped catch in the slip cordon which saw him get to a century himself. However, he did not receive ample support from other ends where Morgan and Stokes threw their wickets to part-timers trying to up the ante and play mind games. It was looking dark until Buttler walked in. Together with Root, he stitched a valuable 130 runs partnership which brought England back into the game. Root and Buttler completed their centuries in the process as well becoming first and second batsmen of the tournament to hit centuries.
