Pakistan’s Batting –

Pakistan batted first in this must-win game, they started off well as Fakhar Zaman and Imam ul Haq gave the perfect start for Pakistan. They shared a partnership of 81 runs, which set the mark for a big score. The struggle for Proteas continued as they failed and allowed the game to drift away from them. As the Pakistani openers looked good, they were about to reach their 50 run mark. But it was Imran Tahir who gave South Africa this vital of Fakhar Zaman. The Pakistani opener fell for 44 runs. Then came Babar Azam, he and Iman batted for 6 overs and after that, it was a magnificent catch, bowled by Imran Tahir which ended Imam’s innings for 44 runs.

South Africa should have seized this opportunity but they allowed the game to further drift away. Babar Azam and Mohd Hafeez repaired the innings a bit. Babar was going well but Hafeez was struggling to time the ball. The Run rate dropped down due to Hafeez’s slow innings. The introduction of Aiden Markram, the bowler did the trick for South Africa. Skipper du Plessis tried something new was rewarded with the prize wicket of Hafeez. He was out for 20 runs.

Babar was joined by Haris Sohail and both the batsmen continued to pile on runs. It was Sohail who decided up the anti and Babar was the one who wanted to stay till the end. This was the match-turning partnership for Pakistan and the South African bowlers failed to provide vital breakthroughs. Babar and Sohail batted well, they got Pakistan to such a position where the Proteas couldn’t reach. Their partnership for 81 runs was the hallmark of the Pakistani innings. South Africa allowed this partnership to get away and they paid a heavy price for it. Babar reached his 2nd fifty of the tournament and was out quickly. Phehlukwayo took this vital wicket of Babar Azam for 69 runs. But the problem for South Africa was Haris Sohail, he continued to attack the South African bowlers with Imad Wasim. Pakistan finished well, this partnership of 71 runs between Imad Wasim and Haris Sohail allowed them to set a score above 300 runs. Wasim played some brutal shots. His short inning did the job for Pakistan. He was out for 23 runs which he scored from just 15 balls. Wahab Raiz couldn’t last long, but Haris made sure that Pakistan got the 300 run mark. He was the last man dismissed on the last ball of the last over. Haris played a wonderful inning of 89 runs which lifted Pakistan to a score of 308 runs from 50 overs.

South Africa’s pace attack was very ordinary, they didn’t bowl according to their plan. Rabada and Morris were expensive in their spells. It was Lungi Ngidi who bowled well in spite of his hamstring injury and he took 3 wickets to his name. Ngidi, Phehlukwayo and Markram took 1 wicket each while Imran Tahir took 2.

Defending 309 runs was an easy job for the in-form bowling group. But the South African Batsmen found it tough to chase down the total. Pakistan’s bowling was disciplined and they also bowled with the right line and length. South Africa lost Amla in the very first over. Amla was caught plumb in front by Amir for just 2 runs. Then, Skipper Du Plessis and De Kock repaired the innings after the early loss. Their partnership of 87 runs kept the match in balance for South Africa.It went all well as this partnership went through, but once this stand was broken South Africa lost their grip in the match. And Quinton de Kock’s dismissal was that turning point of this match. De Kock went for another big shot in that over and he was caught brilliantly by Iman ul Haq for 47 runs. It was Faf du Plessis lone’s innings which gave South Africa hope. After the fall of Markram, Du Plessis got the support from David Miller and Van der Dussen. But once their skipper was caught out, everything was over for South Africa. Faf du Plessis was out after making 63 runs.

Miller and Van der Dussen snitched a partnership which kept the Proteas in the hunt. Their partnership went along nicely but unfortunately didn’t last for long. Van der Dussen was out for 36 runs and in the next over David Miller was perished to Shaheen Afridi for 31 runs. It was Phehlukwayo’s unbeaten 46 runs that took South Africa above the 250 run mark. South Africa managed only 259 runs from their allotted 50 overs. They lost this game by 48 runs. It was a clinical performance from the Pakistani bowlers. They were too good with their line and lengths, they were also very disciplined as a bowling unit.Shadab Khan and Wahab Riaz took 3 wickets, Mohd Amir took 2 and Shaheen Afridi took 1 wicket to his name. Pakistans semi-final hopes are still alive after this win.Haris Sohail was named man of the match for the brilliant knock of 89 runs.
