South Africa vs India Match Highlights – ‘Building partnerships was the key in this chase. It was a small total, but since there was something in it for the bowlers, it was tough and we needed partnerships.’ These words of Rohit Sharma can be understood from the context of the game which despite being a low scoring match went right till the end of the wire. India did not have the best of the outings but there was a difference of a man in India than South Africa and though it was his slowest centuries, it will be remembered for good. A century which won a match and hearts of a billion Indians. Such was the composure of Indian vice-captain that his shot selections were almost immaculate. Healthy support from other batsmen was enough for India to beat South Africa by 6 wickets in a match which also turned out to be a third straight loss for South African team, a record in itself in the history of world cups.

Earlier in the day, South Africa was invited by Virat Kohli to take the bat, a strategy which has become common in this world cup. The strategy to know the field before by letting the opposition bat is common since much would not change in the field in the English conditions. But today’s pitch was delusional in itself as it had enough for both batsmen and the bowlers.

India started off in great fashion when Bumrah, bowling his second over found the edge of Hashim Amla, South Africa’s most trusted batsman straight to Rohit Sharma at second slip who did not miss the chance. De Kock who had survived some very close deliveries till now could not survive one delivery which angled away from his body straight to gully and South Africa was reeling under pressure already.
Du Plessis and Van Der Dussan tried settling in and forging a partnership of their own but former was undone by a google by Chahal which found the stumps. Duminy was all over the park in understanding deliveries from Kuldeep where one of his deliveries stayed low and he was caught LBW. At 89, South Africa had lost half their team. Some partnerships between Miller and Phehlukwayo and then later between Phehlukwayo and Morris, Morris and Rabada saw South Africa post a competitive total of 227 for loss of 9 wickets on a wicket which was sticky and two-paced. South Africa was sensing some possibility in this one.
The Indian team went out confidently into the chase but were soon brought into consciousness with some excellent fast bowling by Rabada and Phehlukwayo from both ends. Rabada was also introduced first up who did not impress much in the game. Dhawan was soon sent packing when he nicked one back to De Kock. Kohli who replaced Dhawan at the crease started off cautiously before edging one to the wicketkeeper off Phehlukwayo. At 54 for two, South Africa was sensing some chances of coming back into the game by making some more inroads but KL Rahul who joined Rohit Sharma who by now was looking settled had other plans of themselves as well.
