Despite a shambolic downfall in England which saw India slump to a 4-1 defeat against the hosts, the country managed to hold onto their top ranking in the ICC Team Rankings 2018. A downfall of 10 points saw India dive down from a 125 rating to 115 but it was still enough to see them maintain their pole position in the rankings. England was awarded for their outstanding efforts a rise of one place to find themselves on the fourth spot.
Wrapping up an emphatic series win for themselves with a 118 run, England’s endeavours paid off for them with an 8 rating rise in the ICC Team Rankings 2018 to move up to 105 from 97 before the series. This took them above New Zealand who is on 102 rating to fourth and within just one point of Australia and South Africa who are both on 106.
The table makes for an interesting read and signifies the competitiveness present in test cricket today. With some fantastic test matches been played within the last few months, the revival of cricket’s truest and oldest format is on the rise which is visible in the fact that just 4 points spate 4 nations in the ranking table.
For the Virat Kohli lead side, the defeat hasn’t hampered their position much. Still 9 points ahead of South Africa, India will safely hold onto their throne for now. However drastic improvements are needed for this crop of players if India is to maintain their supremacy at the top for long. India will next feature in tests in October when West Indies come visiting before jetting off to Australia for another long and tough tour.
