ICC Test Cricket Rankings: Kohli tops the list

One of the last editions of the ICC Test Cricket Rankings for 2018 has been released following Australia and India, and New Zealand and Sri Lanka’s recently concluded test match. Following his exploits of 123 in the first innings of the Perth test, Indian captain Virat Kohli consolidated his top spot, reaching 934 ranking points in the ICC Test cricket rankings. Breathing right down his neck though is Kane Willamson with his 91 against Sri Lanka taking him to 915 points.

After helping his side script their first test series win away against Pakistan, Williamson had become the first batsman from New Zealand to break the coveted barrier of 900 rating points. Just 7 points away from Kohli in the last rankings, Williamson who had a good chance of going into 2019 as the number one ranked batsman sees his bid pegged back with Kohli taking a substantial lead over him courtesy of his 25th century.

From the Indian camp, the bowlers registered massive strides in the bowling ranks with Shami’s career-best 6-52 in the second innings seeing him climb two spots to 21. Jaspirt Bumrah, who is continuing his meteoric rise in test cricket with another five-wicket haul in the second test rose to the 28th spot, from his earlier 33rd position. Ishant Sharma also saw a rise in position to take the 26th spot in the list.

The other players from India who saw positive gains in the charts were Ajinkya Rahane who now sits on 15, Rishabh Pant who took a massive jump to 48, moving up 11 spots and Hanuma Vihari at number 65 in the all-rounder’s list.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood were the big gainers in the latest instalment of the ICC test cricket rankings, moving up to 7th and 9th place respectively on the back of their impressive match-winning performances against India. Lyon’s man of the match performance of 8/106 in Australia’s convincing 146-run series-levelling win, saw him move up seven spots, while Hazelwood’s figures of 2/66 and 2/24 moved him up two places.

The New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka first test match which ended in a draw saw Tom Latham shift up 15 spots to reach the 22nd ranking spot after his unbeaten score of 264.
