The word ‘kani’ in Malayalam means ‘that which is seen first’ hence, ‘Vishukkani’ means ‘that which is seen first on Vishu.’

The Vishukkani is prepared by Malayali women that consists rice, lemon, jackfruit, kajal, betel leaves, golden yellow Konna flowers, oil lamp, coins and image or idol of God Vishnu. The Vishu arrangement includes an image of Vishnu, usually in the form of Krishna. It is believed that on the day of Vishu, the first thing after waking up in the morning family members should see Vishukkani.

On this auspicious day, people visit temples like Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple or the Kulathupuzha Sree BaalaShastha Temple in early hours. People prepare different dishes and wake up early to watch the laburnum tree. Children are also an integral part of the celebrations and wear new clothes and burst firecrackers. On this day, people also prepare a special meal called Sadhya, which is a mix of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items.
