With just pride left to play for after having already dropped out of the race to the final, West Indies took to the pitch in one last desperate hope to go home with a win. It was not to be a happy ending for them though as their woes with both the bat and ball continued. They were thrashed by India in a commanding show by the Indian side that will give them the much-needed confidence ahead of the final against the hosts next week.
India’s decision to bat first looked to be a bad one after captain Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant both departed in the fourth over to Chemar Holder. However, Hanuma Vihari and Prithvi Shaw soon got to the task of rebuilding the innings, ensuring India faced no further setbacks in their quest to set a massive total for West Indies with a well-worked partnership. The duo were cricketing bliss in their respective innings that saw both reach their centuries as the West Indian bowlers were left scratching their heads as to how to dismiss the pair. They piled on 160 runs in just 23 overs in a partnership that was the epitome of perfect batting. Seeing out the West Indians at the beginning of their innings, the both of them took no time to get going once they had settled in. 16 boundaries saw Shaw bring up his 100 in just 87 balls with Vihari bringing his 100 in 104 runs. He continued long after Shaw departed to set up two further 50 run stands to help his side to 354 off their 50 overs.
Coming out to chase, West Indies were sent packing for just 151 in 38 overs with Axar Patel being the pick of the Indian bowlers, registering figures of 4-34.
