Kargil victory day – The Indian armed forces organize a series of events and functions on July 26 every year to celebrate their heroic and famous victory in the Kargil war against Pakistan. Known as Kargil Vijay Diwas, soldiers who martyred and laid down their lives to maintain the integrity of the country are remembered and saluted on this day. The occasion also celebrates the Indian army for its valor and courage in protecting the country from all nefarious elements.

The Kargil War will forever be etched in the hearts of every Indian. Not only it was the first televised war, covered by journalists from not over India but also all over the world which was also a turning point in the history of the country. This was a big misadventure by Pakistan with the terrorist harboring country thinking it could match the Indian army. In the first week of March 1999, India had received reports of intruders moving into some sectors of Kargil. By the time, it was clear that the Pakistani army had infiltrated with the intention to occupy and capture the sector. The Indian army launched operation, ‘Vijay’ to drive out the anti-national elements from the country.

Despite India ready to give the foolhardy nation a second chance, the peace overtures of the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had been spurned by General Pervez Musharraf. Left with no option, the Indian army ended up marching to war with Pakistan which ended in destroying and decimating Pakistan’s army. It was a ferocious victory for India. The war saw air power at the height of 32,000 feet used for the first time in the Indian army’s history to identify and shoot down infiltrators. More than 3000 Pakistani army men and terrorists were killed by the Indian army in a show of strength and resilience by the country.
