A toothless Sri Lankan side was handed their biggest ever ODI defeat as they went down by 168 runs to India in Colombo. Dhoni who was playing his 300th match was handed the perfect gift as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 207 to hand India a massive victory.

With their fans turning against them and the board of selectors deciding to resign after the one day series against Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan cricket was at its all-time low before the fourth match against India. The team knew they had to turn up at Colombo if they had any chance of earning back the trust of their supporters and keep themselves in the race for qualifying for the World Cup. India on the other hand, went into the match in joyous spirits, having wrapped up the series comfortably in the third ODI. With the match of very little consequence, the Indians decided to give youngsters a chance.

In the match India v/s Sri Lanka, India blew away the Lankan bowling unit as they notched a huge total of 375/5 in 50 overs against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli (131), Rohit Sharma (104), MS Dhoni (49 and Manish Pandey (50*) played a crucial role towards the end as India notched the highest total by any team in Sri Lanka against Sri Lanka. In reply, the Lankans once again failed to reach 250 in the series as they were all out for 207 in another disappointing batting display.

It was a good game for us. We spoke about not getting complacent and today was a satisfying day. We wanted to bat first, the wicket was amazing to bat on. It was a good toss to win and it was very difficult for the opposition to maintain that required run rate. The batting order can be flexible – Virat Kohli

We are still to get 250 in the series, I think the youngsters are too excited and couldn’t perform well to their potential. Hopefully, they will come back strong and perform well in the coming games – Lasith Malinga
