The draw for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to take place starting May 20 were revealed with good news for India. India’s men and women’s team both were put in Group A in the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup which is slated to take place in Bangkok from 20-27 May.
Despite facing disappointment at the qualifiers played for these tournaments, the Indian sides went through based on their overall rankings. Led by Kidambi Srikanth, the Indian men’s’ team lost 1-3 in the quarter-finals to China in Indonesia. The PV Sindhu captained Indian women’s side failed to fare much better after they suffered a 1-3 defeat to Indonesia at the same stage at last month’s Badminton Asia Team Championships.
India will fancy their chances of going all the way in the tournament after being given relatively easy matches. They’re paired with China, France and Australia in Group A in the Thomas Cup. With China their only real competitors, Indian men will be looking to go past France and Australia with ease and make their way to the next round of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Women’s team has been drawn alongside Japan, Canada and Australia in the Uber Cup. Expect India to put in strong performances against all three countries as they boast of a strong squad who should not be troubled much by these three countries. The Indian contingent who’ve had to face disappointment after reaching the semi-finals in the last two editions will be looking to improve on those performances and bring home the cup this time around.
