India lose in Intercontinental Cup 2018 – Match Highlights:
- India lost 2-1
- They ended the group stages with 6 points
- The final will be played on June 10
The men in blue were greeted to another full house on Thursday as they stepped out in the Andheri Sports Complex for their final league stage game of this year’s Intercontinental Cup. It was a disappointing result for the home side to see India lose in Intercontinental Cup 2018 who lost their fourth match of the tournament by 2 goals to 1 against New Zealand. The win hardly impacts their final hopes though after they have already qualified with six points from three wins.
Manager Stephen Constantine’s strategy of making seven changes in his starting eleven turned out to be the wrong decision as the youngster failed to make the most of their opportunity on the field. Despite the match being meaningless for the hosts in terms of their future in the competition, a win could have done their confidence a big boost ahead of the final on June 10. However you can’t get everything you want. With the inexperienced players failing to catch the eye of the manager we expect the usual 11 to be fielded in a couple of days time as India look to take home the trophy.
Coming back to yesterday’s match we take a look at what went wrong for India. It was India’s defence that resulted in being their downfall on the night. With Sunil Chhetri once again turning out to be the game changer for India as he fired the hosts into a lead in the 47th minute, India’s attack kept knocking again and again on New Zealand’s doors. The visitors however stood the test well enough and made the most of the opportunities that fell their way. They made the most of a naïve Indian defence with Andre Earnest De Jong (49th) levelling scores in just 2 minutes and Moses Dyer (86th) winning the match late on for them.
The next match between Kenya and Chinese Taipei will be the deciding force for this year’s finalists.
