India squad for India vs West Indies Test Series – Rohit, Shikhar Dropped, Mayank Aggarwal And Siraj Make Test Team
The Board Of Control For Cricket In India announced India’s squad for the test series against West Indies. Set to commence from October 4th in Rajkot, the series will see India host the Caribbean country for two test matches with the second match starting from the 12th in Hyderabad. While the 15 man squad sees the usual setup for the Indians, a few surprises have also been thrown up the BCCI. Here’s all you want to know about the India squad for India vs West Indies Test Series.
After taking a break from the Asia Cup, Virat Kohli returns to the Indian side as captain. The 29-year-old diminutive batsman, who was rested after playing non-stop for over a year for both country and club, returns to lead the side.
Spinner Ashwin also returns to the Indian squad after successfully recovering from an injury he had sustained in India. Bolstering the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav who was dropped from the team for the last two tests has been recalled to the side in home conditions that will aid him. Jadeja completes the spinning trip for the Indians.
The BCCI has decided to go in with a new look pace department for the series. Resting India’s spearheads Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah to manage their workload and being unable to select Ishant Sharma due to an injury, the selectors have opted to go in with players who have impressed in the domestic circuit. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur make the fast bowling attack with Mohammed Siraj earning his maiden test call-up to complete the line-up.
Siraj has been rewarded for his strong and regular performances in both the local circuit and with India A squad. Shining for India A against South Africa A in unofficial Test matches, where he scalped 14 wickets in two matches, Siraj followed up with 11 wickets against Australia A to make a strong case for himself to the selectors who have decided to put trust in the pacer.
Another player who sees himself earn a debut test call-up for the country is opener Mayank Aggarwal. Replacing an underperforming Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank who scored over 200 runs in the previous domestic season and continued his form for India A fully deserves his place in the side.
The BCCI’s team selection has outlined the vision of the selectors for the team going forward. Looking to avoid another debacle like the recent test series against England, the BCCI has moved in quickly to replace the deadwood present in the side with new blood. Breaking the brunt of the selectors in the aftermath of the England tour has seen Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik and Dhawan all being dropped for their dismal form.
The BCCI’s selection, however, is something that has seen a mixed reaction. While the management has brought in some talented and deserving players, dropping Rohit Sharma who was integral in the Asia Cup triumph has seen the BCCI being blasted. The opener was not only was successful as a captain but lead the side from the front with his invaluable knocks, something that the Indian side could do with going into the Australian tour starting November.
