After suffering a jolt in the first match of the three-match ODI series, India bounced back when they took on Sri Lanka in the second match in Mohali. After losing the first match in Dharamshala by 7 wickets this match was a must win for the Indian side if they were to keep alive their hopes of winning the series. And they did it in style as they trounced Sri Lanka by 141 runs to level the series 1-1.
The first ODI was a rude reminder to India that on their day Sri Lanka has the talent to beat any side in the world as they thrashed India in their own backyard. An embarrassing batting collapse by the batting strong Indian side saw them gift the first match to Sri Lanka and pour water on their dreams of another whitewash win against the visitors. They knew that they could not take the visitors lightly again and would have to come good with the bat this time around as they batted first in the second match of the three-match series.
A swashbuckling inning of 208 by stand-in captain Rohit Sharma took the Lankan bowling to the rafters and completely destroyed the Lankan side even before they began their chase. The opener played a mouth-watering innings as he went on to become the first batsman to register three double hundreds in ODIs. The innings was extra special as it came on the day of his first wedding anniversary and moved his wife to tears as the opener dedicated the knock to her. Sharma was slow to get off the blocks and took time getting to his 100 but exploded in the ending overs of the game as he reached his double hundred in double quick time and was ably guided by Iyer and Dhawan to take India to a huge total of 392-4.
With all odds against them, Sri Lanka faltered in their chase. Only Angelo Matthews(111) saw the entirety of the chase and it was only due to him that Sri Lanka was even able to get past 250. The Lankan batting unit failed collectively as the chase got nowhere. They ended up playing all their 50 overs to no avail and ended up handing India a massive win by 141 runs.
