India vs Afghanistan match highlights – Just two days and its over! Afghanistan’s first ever international test match did not quite go according to plan for them as they were humbled by the world no.1 test side. The Chinnaswamy Stadium saw a historic test match being played out not only in terms of it being Afghanistan’s inaugural test but also the biggest margin by which India has ever won a test match in its long history.
Resuming at 378-6, India were bowled out for 474, adding just 96 runs on day 2. A late slog fest by pacer Umesh Yadav saw him get 26 off 21 and take Indian past the 450 run mark in their first innings.
Coming out to bat, Afghanistan knew they had to dig in and grind it out if they had any chance of staying alive in the test match. However their inexperience and lack of expertise in the longest format of the game was laid bare as batsman after batsman departed, unable to play a proper test innings. They lacked the basic patience and attitude needed to play a test innings, something that will improve as they play more and more matches. The first innings passed away in a jiffy with India running though the Afghans like a roller-coaster. It was only a not out innings of 36 by Shahidi that saw the visitors get past the 100 run mark and saved them the blushes of getting bowled out at the two-digit mark. A nine over spell of 4-17 by Jadeja was too hot to handle for Afghanistan and helped India enforce the follow-on.
The second innings was the same with Afghanistan failing to learn from their first innings mistake. India who looked to be in a bit of too much of a hurry to wrap up the match bulldozed past Afghanistan’s batting line-up for the second time in a day to take 20 wickets in just 66.3 overs. They bowled them out for 6 runs shorter than their first innings total as Afghanistan were dismissed for 103. Ashwin took over from Jadeja in the second innings, picking up 4 as the Indian spinners who were said to be a class below Afghanistan’s before the match showed their real mettle.
Despite the result, the match is a big step forward for Afghanistan. A team filled with smiling players, gave their all with the ball to comeback and dismiss an Indian side that was well on its way to post a total in excess of 600. It is only a matter of time that their game improves; with the talent at their disposal it’s going to be sooner rather than later.
