India vs Australia 2nd test match highlights 2020 – In the absence of Virat Kohli, there high expectations set for stand in skipper, Ajinkya Rahane to take the charge and help India glide through the Boxing day test while forgetting about the horrors of their first Test defeat. On Day 1, Australia were all out for 195 owing to the 4 wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah (4/56), 3 wickets from Ravichandran Ashwin (3/35) and 2 wickets from debutant Mohammad Siraj (2/40). Aussies could only manage a meagre 195 in the first innings with brief scores from Marnus Labuschagne (48), Travis Head(48) and Matthew Wade(30). The day ended with Mayank Agarwal being duck out and India being reduced to 36/1.

On Day 2, debutant Shubman Gill scored 45. Rahane took the charge of the batting and scored a sapping century with Jadeja holding the wicket on the other end. Rahane’s batting frustrated the Aussie bowling lineup and helped set up an 82 run lead over Australia at the end of day 2. India were 277 for 5 with an unbeaten 104 from Rahane and unbeaten 40 from Jadeja.

Day 3 began with India already holding a decent lead over the Aussies, Rahane and Jadeja furthered the lead. Jadeja completed his 15th Test fifty and Rahane was run out. Post his runout, Rahane won the hearts of the fans with his incredible gesture of patting Jadeja and encouraging him to score big instead of being mad at him for running him out. 5 quick wickets from the Aussies helped completed India’s batting. India scored a 133-run lead after being all out for 326.

The Indian bowlers led by Jadeja’s double and one wicket each from Bumrah, Umesh, Siraj and Ashwin helped reduced Australia to 99 for 6.         Cameron Green and Pat Cummins resisted further fall of wickets and helped finish the third day at 133 for 6. Umesh Yadav had to depart from the field owing to a calf injury still the remaining 4 bowlers managed to keep things under control.

India are in an excellent position going into Day 4 with Australia holding a 2 run lead with just 4 wickets in hand.

On Day 4 – India emerged victorious on the fourth day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne. With this win, the ongoing Border Gavaskar Test Series between India and Australia is now level 1-1.

At the end of Day 3, Australia were 133 for 6 with a 2-run lead over India. Things were looking good for India as they had a good platform to take 4 wickets on Day 4 and close the match cheaply. After a spectacular century-knock by stand in skipper Ajinkya Rahane and a fifty from Ravindra Jadeja, India had a 131 run lead over the Aussies at the end of first innings. Jadeja also took 2 wickets in the second innings and a wicket each from Bumrah, Umesh, Siraj and Ashwin helped crack 6 wickets at the end of day 3.

The Day 4 started with Australia holding off the Indian bowling attack but managed to score just 16 runs in 14 overs until the new ball arrived. Bumrah managed to crack Cummins’ wicket with the hard ball. Green played very well, as compared to the Australian top order and almost scored his first Test fifty but Siraj’s short ball helped crack his wicket. Nathan Lyon and Hazlewood were removed by Siraj and Ashwin respectively as the lunch got delayed. Australia managed to 200 in the second innings in 103.1 overs , their slowest Test innings at home since 1986. A target of 70 was set for India.

India, although lost their 2 wickets early ( Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara), but the target wasn’t big enough to really worry the Indian batting lineup. It was only befitting that the winning runs came from the bat of stand in skipper Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane now has 3 wins in 3 matches as a Test captain, thus maintaining 100 percent win percentage as skipper.

India managed to provide a befitting reply to the critics especially after their dreadful defeat at Adelaide. The absence of Virat Kohli only added more pressure to the Indian team and stand in skipper Rahane but they batted and bowled beautifully. This win will surely be among the greatest wins of all time for India on foreign soil.
