Cometh the hour, cometh the man. And come in style did he. Set a mammoth 199 to win by England in Bristol to win the three-match T20 series, Indian opener Rohit Sharma showed everyone why he is called the Hitman of the Indian batting line-up. The Mumbai boy was the mainstay of the Indian innings as he took just 56 balls to reach his century, enabling India to win the match in the progress. Chasing down the target with 7 wickets and 8 balls to spare saw India win the series decider and with that seal a famous series victory on Indian soil.
Billed as India’s toughest challenge in a year, the English tour was considered to be extremely hard to crack. Come out with a win was what we all hoped for when India began their T20 series against England on Tuesday especially after England’s recent battering of Australia in T20s. Getting off to the perfect start after winning the first match in Manchester, India were brought hurtling back to the ground on Friday by England. With the series level at 1-1, India travelled to the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff with hopes of not just winning the match and with it the series, but also with one eye on the number 1 spot in the international T20 rankings. Cheered and ebbed on by thousands of Indians on Sunday, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma got about their job of demolishing the English bowlers in style to win the series 2-1.
Coming back to India vs England 3rd T20 highlights, winning the toss and choosing to chase, India looked to repeat their exploits of the first match. Earning his maiden call for India, pacer Deepak Chahar quickly learned that international cricket is a totally different animal from domestic competitions. Taken a particular liking to by Roy and Buttler, Chahar was hit all over the park as the English openers went berserk in the powerplay. 67 off 31 by Roy in a show of pure clean hitting too England past the 100 mark in just 9 overs, putting them well on course for a 200 run score. It was a middle order come-back by India that helped them restrict the hosts to 198, giving them the much-needed momentum going into the chase.
Going into the chase knowing that the target was not the toughest on a relatively easy pitch, Rohit Sharma showed he meant business from ball one. He and Virat Kohli hit an 89 run stand, one that put one of India’s foot in the winning ship with Hardik Pandya coming and teeing off from his first ball to complete the last rites of the match. Sharma’s third T20 century saw him become the only batsman in the world with at least 3 centuries in all three formats of the game. The match also saw MS Dhoni become the only wicket-keeper with 50 catches in T20s and 5 catches in a T20 match.
