India vs England test series – Match preview
- The first match of the series starts on August 1
- The match will start at 3:30 pm IST
- The two teams play a 5 match test series
Come tomorrow and Edgbaston will play host to the first match of India vs England test series. After a break of more than two weeks, the teams are ready to resume a hard-contested summer tour which is currently level at 1-1. While India took the T20 series 2-1, England bounced back from a losing position in the ODI series to take it 2-1. And after weeks of heavy and gruelling practice, the teams are all set to fight out for the winning honours in round 3.
The series opener will be a special occasion for the English, marking their 1000th test match. Out of the 999 men’s Tests that England have played till date, they have won 357, lost 297 and drawn 345. And the famous Edgbaston ground on which England and India will play the first match starting Wednesday has always been a happy hunting ground for the English sides over the years. Playing 50 matches on it till date, England have won a staggering 27, losing just 8. This record augurs well for the hosts going into tomorrow’s match who will be looking to continue the head to head record of 5-0 against India on the ground.
The Indians will be no walk-over though. After a disappointing loss in the ODI series, the BCCI came down with some heavy measures to ensure the players focus on the task at hand. Wives and girlfriends were banned from accompanying the players till the end of the month-long test series in a bid by the BCCI to ensure players concentrate on the game only. The BCCI and team management also came down heavily on the Essex cricket board after not being provided adequate and proper training pitches.
If the one and only practice match played by India against Essex before the test series is anything to go by, then India look up to the task in the longest format of the game. An all-round batting and bowling performance saw Indian do well on a green top, one that was tailor-made to provide all the aid and help to the Essex side. One area of concern still remains for India in Shikhar Dhawan who continued his poor form in the practice match, falling for a duck in both the innings. The opening slot is vital for India to ensure the new ball is negotiated safely for the middle-order batsmen and will have to be sorted out to solidify India’s batting line-up against an England bowling unit who will move the ball both ways on the fast, pacey and swinging wickets.
For the English, Adil Rashid’s inclusion in the test side has put the team in the middle of a huge controversy. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was included in England’s squad for the first match of India vs England test series, despite saying he wanted to concentrate on limited-overs cricket which saw strong reactions from all quarters in England, dividing the country into two parts. This along with more than 10,000 seats being unsold for the first match has hampered the English side’s preparations to an extent, which Kohli and the Indian unit will be looking to pounce upon.
