A disappointing performance by the Indians saw them lose the last match of the one day series against England and with that the series too. Playing in Leeds for the trophy, the England side trumped India by 8 wickets to take home the ODI series 2-1 and avenge the loss of the T20 series. It was a below-par performance by the Indians in both the batting and bowling department, one that completely deserved the result they faced on the day.
Coming back to India vs England Third ODI Highlights, What a couple of days can do to a team. Coming off the back of a renouncing T20 series win and a convincing win in the first ODI of the three-match series, India self-destructed in the last two matches. Looking a pale shadow of the side that had troubled England to no extant, India were no better off than a blunt knife. They lacked the cutting edge in their batting and bowling and were unable to counter a much improved, well drilled English side. Such has been the dip in their performances over the last couple of days that failed to turn up in the biggest match of this tour till now. A one-sided final saw England dominate the Indians from start to finish, shining with not only the ball but bat as well.
The Indian batting performance was completely contrary to nature. Losing three wickets to spinner Adil Rashid was completely unimaginable given the excellent technique the Indians boast of when it comes to playing spin. Dropping KL Rahul for Dinesh Karthik seemed to be a good decision after he played some exquisite strokes off the English spinners, putting the pressure back on them. However, he departed for 21, playing a rash shot and was soon followed by Kohli (71) who was bowled off a beauty by Rashid, leaving us in as such shock as the captain. Raina failed as usual leaving us wondering why he hasn’t been dropped till now and late cameos by Dhoni and Thakur didn’t help India get past 250, giving them something to fight for.
With the pitch offering plenty of purchase to the spinners in the second innings, the duo of Yadav and Chahal were expected to wreck havoc among the English batsmen. And to counter this the English openers started amassing the runs from ball one itself. Scoring at faster than run a ball, the English piled the pressure on the Indians, forcing them to introduce the spinner much earlier than they would have liked. Not that the spinners made any difference though. Eoin Morgan (85) and Joe Root (100) played classy innings, ensuring that the spinners were played with caution while taking on the pacers t string together a match and series winning partnership.
Joe Root who scored a consecutive 100 in the series ended up as man of the series after amassing a total of 216 runs in the three matches in which he was dismissed in only the first ODI. Another talking point from the match was Dhoni taking the match ball and wicket after the end of the match, sparking rumours of his retirement.
