India vs New Zealand 1st Day 2nd Test 2020 Highlights – India had yet another flop show with the bat in the second test which was played at Christchurch. Despite three half-centuries in India’s first innings, the visitors managed only 242 runs on the board. Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Hanuma Vihari scored vital 50s and because of them, India could reach a decent score in the innings of the second test match.
It was again a waste of an opportunity on the spicy track of Hagley Oval. The Kiwis bowlers were again on top of the Indian batsmen. After the rain delayed the play for 45 minutes, India could not manage to win the toss again as New Zealand sent the visitors to bat first on a spicy track.
But when India started well, it seemed as the toss didn’t matter much. The Indian nerves eased a bit when Prithvi Shaw showed a bit of character after failing in both the innings of the Wellington Test Match. Shaw gave a brisk start to the Indian innings as the men in blue raced away to 26 runs without any loss.
India vs New Zealand 1st Day 2nd Test 2020 Highlights
In the fifth over, the Indian Openers tried to put the pressure on New Zealand’s quicks. But this pressure of New Zealand was eased when Trent Boult got the wicket of Mayank Agarwal quickly. Agarwal was caught plumb in front for just 7 runs.
Then came Cheteshwar Pujara who wanted to make a mark in this test match after failing in the first test match. Pujara and Shaw got the Indian innings going with a small stand of 50 runs. Shaw batted well in this innings but didn’t last long after reaching his half-century. Shaw was out to Jamieson for 54 runs.
Then came the king, with just 20 minutes to go for the tea break. Pujara and Kohli quietly went past the session. India was 80 for 2 in the second session. But, it was Southee who continued to pounce on Kohli as he again got the key wicket of the Indian captain right after tea.
India vs New Zealand 1st Day 2nd Test 2020 Highlights – Kohli was trapped in front in the second over after the tea break. He then went on to review that decision and due to poor judgment, India lost a review and the Kiwis had a big fish. Kohli was out for just 3 runs as his flop batting show in New Zealand continued in a must-win game for India.
The wicket of the captain followed the wicket of the vice-captain as well. India lost the momentum after the tea break. India’s vice-captain, Ajinkya Rahane joined Captain Kohli in the pavilion. He played a handy knock in Wellington but here, he managed to score just 7 runs.
India again found themselves in a position where they had themselves to blame. In this rebuilding phase, Vihari and Pujara tried to steady the Indian innings but they both struck crucial half-centuries to their names which somewhat brought the Indian innings on track.
India vs New Zealand 1st Day 2nd Test 2020 Highlights – Pujara and Vihari shared a stand of 81 runs in this rebuilding process. When these two were batting, it seemed like India will go till the 300 run mark at least. But when Vihari fell for 55 runs, the onus was on India’s wall – Pujara to take India to that score. But this also didn’t happen as New Zealand gave timely blows to India.
Pujari was out on 54 runs and after that, it was again a collapse due to a poor batting show from the lower order batsmen. A lot was expected from Pant and Jadeja but this time, they both disappointed the Indian fans. Pant was out for 12 runs while Jadeja managed just 9 runs to his name.
India’s score reached the 242 run mark mainly because of Shami and Bumrah who had some batting fantasy after the top and the lower order failed. The fast bowling duo added 26 runs and took the team to a decent score.
India vs New Zealand 1st Day 2nd Test 2020 Highlights – The Kiwis were good again. Kyle Jamieson impressed again. He took his first five-wicket haul in test matches while his fellow bowlers complemented their younger partner well. Southee and Boult picked up 2 wickets each while Neil Wagner took 1 wicket to his name.
In reply to India’s modest score of 242, the Kiwi openers have given them a solid start. Tom Latham and Tom Blundell allowed New Zealand to strengthen their grip in this second and the last test of this two-match test series.
The Indian bowlers failed to pick up any wickets in the 23 overs which they had bowled so far. Blundell is unbeaten on 29 runs while Latham is not out on 27 runs. New Zealand is in the stronger position with 63 runs on the board and the home side is still trailing by 179 runs in their 1st innings.
