India’s First Whitewash in the World Test Championship came by the hands of New Zealand on Day 3 at Christchurch

India vs New Zealand 2nd test 2020 highlights – India had completed a comprehensive whitewash in the five-match T20 International series but since then, it is the hosts – New Zealand, who have dominated the 50 over format series and the two test matches. The Kiwis won the three-match One Day International Series 3-0 and then also won the two test match series 2-0.

New Zealand is the only team in the world test championship to hand India a 2-0 whitewash in test matches so far. India lost both the test matches very badly. These losses came because of India’s batting failure.

The first test matches went on for four days because the rain saved India on day one. But in the second and last match at Christchurch, New Zealand wrapped up the series in just three days. The bowlers of New Zealand were too good in front of the Indian batting powerhouse.

India was restricted for only 242 runs in the first innings. They scored three half-centuries in that innings but none of them converted to a big score which would have put pressure on New Zealand. In reply, New Zealand also struggled with the bat. After a decent start of 66 runs, the middle order batsmen of New Zealand failed to cope up with Shami, Bumrah, Jadeja, and Umesh Yadav.

But a late resistance from De Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson, and Neil Wagner allowed New Zealand to stay in the game. The Kiwis reached 235 and gave just a 7 runs lead for India in their 2nd innings. But, it was a flop batting show again which allowed New Zealand to make a comeback in this test match.

Trent Boult was the star for New Zealand. He did the majority of damage to the Indian batting unit. When the second day’s play ended, India was already reeling at 90 for the loss of 6 wickets. Pujara was again the top scorer with just 24 runs while Agarwal failed again with 3 runs. The Skipper continued his flop show and Shaw, who batted well in the first innings, didn’t have anything to say in the second innings. He also departed after scoring 14 runs.

India vs New Zealand 2nd test 2020 highlights – Ajinkya Rahane is usually good with the short deliveries but in second innings of this test match, Rahane had no answers to Boult’s deadly bouncers. He tried his best to stay with Pujara but eventually, he was out for just 9 runs.

The move to send Umesh Yadav as the night watchman also didn’t work for India. Umesh lasted just 12 deliveries and was out after scoring a single-digit score. At the end of day two, India had Vihari and Pant at the crease with just 97 runs lead.

The day three morning was mourning for India as the lower order didn’t give a fight as compared to that of New Zealand. Vihari was the first one to go on the day 3 morning. He was out in the third over to Tim Southee.

India vs New Zealand 2nd test 2020 highlights – Rishabh Pant’s bad patch looked like its never going to end. He had another failure with the bat in test matches. He also departed quickly after Vihari was out. Pant was caught behind, to a delivery that was bowled by Boult.

Shami tried his luck with the bat again, just like he tried in the 1st innings. But the ball hit him in the right shoulder when he tried to slog it and was caught square leg. Jadeja and Bumrah tried to hit some lusty blows. But unfortunately, Bumrah was the last man who was run out and the Indian innings folded for 124 runs.

The target for New Zealand was just 132 runs. This work was made easy by the Kiwi openers who again got off to a steady start. The two Tom’s of New Zealand added 103 runs for the first wicket. The Indian pacers lacked behind in the second innings of New Zealand. It looked like they had given up due to a poor batting show.

India vs New Zealand 2nd test 2020 highlights – Both the openers raced away to their respective fifties and looked good to finish the game like the first test match in Wellington. It was Umesh Yadav who gave India the late breakthrough. He picked up the wicket of Latham for 52 runs.

Then Bumrah struck for India. He removed the New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson for just 5 runs. Tom Blundell looked to finish the innings for New Zealand when he was also picked up by Bumrah. Blundell was out after scoring 55 runs.

Then, it was mare formality which Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls completed. They were unbeaten on 5 runs each and gave New Zealand the finishing touches. New Zealand won the second test match by seven wickets and also took the 120 crucial points in the world championship table.

India vs New Zealand 2nd test 2020 highlights – The Indian bowlers had nothing much to do because the target was too small in front of the New Zealand batsmen. Bumrah took 2 wickets while Umesh Yadav took 1 wicket to his name. New Zealand whitewashed India in two back to back international series.

The Man of the match was awarded to Kyle Jamieson for his all-round impressive performance and the man of the series was given to Tim Southee for taking up 14 wickets in the two-match test series.

Next Series – India vs South Africa – 3 One Day International Matches, which will start on Thursday 12th March 2020 and go on till 18th March 2020.
