The Indian men’s Under-19 football team is preparing for the AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers that will take place later this year. India is drawn in a group with Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan which will begin on the 6th of November against Uzbekistan. In the warm-up games leading to the AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers, India played Oman this weekend. The blue tigers lost the game by one goal. Oman dominated possession in the first half by having spells where Indian players didn’t even get close to the ball. India relied heavily on their defense and was hoping that they will be able to test Oman on a counter-attack.

Eventually, the Oman midfielders were able to break the Indian deadlock in the 34th minute and scored the opening goal of the game. Oman was content with being up by a goal deservedly. So, as the half time whistle blew, the young Blue Tigers started the second half with enthusiasm. They started to play with more share of possession early in the second half and Ninthoi came close to scoring in the 53rd minute from a free-kick not very far from the net. India kept up with the improved second half and finally got the equalizer in the 68th minute when Robin was brought down inside the box by the Oman defender, prompting the referee to point to the spot.

Givson Singh came to the penalty spot, brimming with confidence and converted the penalty into the first goal for the Indian team, drawing the score to 1-1. After India scored, Oman picked up the pace and the game became very open for both the sides, getting physical and trying to win the ball. In the 78th minute, intricate passing between the Oman midfield and attack enabled them to create another goal, giving them the lead 2-1. India had to settle for a defeat. Team India greatly improved in the last 45 minutes of the match. India will once again get the opportunity to prove themselves to Oman U-19 again on July 22 before taking on Jordan on July 24. As a part of their preparation, they will also be playing against the local club side Kocaelispor U-19 on July 27.
