India vs Pakistan is such an intense rivalry that there are always going to be some heated moments on the field when these two teams lock horns with each other and especially when it happens in a World Cup, the intensity is at some another level.
Today we are going to talk about those moments of the India vs Pakistan World Cup matches where both Indian and Pakistani players lost their cool while they came across each other in the World Cup games.
1992 World Cup (Kiran More and Javed Miandad)
Almost all the wicket-keepers who have played the game so far have this habit of appealing too much from behind the stumps. Sometimes even when it is pretty evident that the batsman is not out, they still appeal, either to break the concentration of the batsman or to pressurize the umpire to give a wrong decision.
Kiran More was probably trying to do the same that day. He was appealing too much with the purpose of breaking Miandad’s concentration who was the key batsman of the Pakistani team. The repetitive shouting from behind the stumps was disturbing Miandad.
Once Miandad even conveyed to the on-field umpire that More is shouting even before the bowler is delivering the ball which is not letting him focus and the umpire told More not to do that, but More didn’t stop. He kept doing it which was fair enough because he wanted to get stuck into Miandad.
It annoyed Miandad so much that at the conclusion of that particular over, he started jumping looking towards the Indian wicket-keeper and started making fun of him for being too enthusiastic. It made for a funny viewing, but it didn’t please the Indian fans at all.
1996 World Cup (Venkatesh Prasad and Aamer Sohail)
It was the quarter-final game of that World Cup and India, batting first, had set Pakistan a stiff target of 288, but Pakistan in reply got off to a flyer. Courtesy some blistering strokes off the blade of Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail, Pakistan raced to a score of 84 in no time.
But Javagal Srinath broke that partnership and brought India back into the game. Sohail though kept smashing them all around from the other end and on one occasion, he played a shot off Venkatesh Prasad through the off side which went to the boundary like a rocket. After that shot, Sohail gestured towards Prasad with the bat as if he is saying “go and bring the ball back.”
It was never going to amuse the fast bowler as he steamed in next ball and bowled it slightly straighter to Sohail this time around. Sohail tried to go for the same shot he had played the previous ball, but it was too close to his body. There was no room for him to free his arms as he missed the delivery and was clean-bowled.
Now Prasad returned the favour to Sohail as he ran in his follow-through and gestured towards Sohail to go back to his dressing room. Within a matter of two deliveries, the two players were at two different ends of the stick. It was a memorable moment for the cricket lovers.
