India vs Pakistan World Cup – India have played Pakistan six times in the ODI World Cup and have emerged victorious every time. While Pakistan maintain a better head-to-head record against the men in blue in the ODIs, they have never been able to topple their arch rivals in the cricket’s mega event.

Here is a summary of all the India vs Pakistan World Cup matches so far –

1992 World Cup

1992 world cup

India came across Pakistan for the first time in the World Cup in 1992 and that tournament was being played in the Round Robin format, the same format that is being used in the current World Cup as well, where every team has to face each other once in the league stage.

India faced Pakistan in their 4th match and it was a curtailed game with both teams getting 49 overs each. India won the toss and opted to bat first and Pakistan were able to restrict India to a modest total of 216, but they couldn’t chase it down as the Indian bowling unit put in a collective effort and bundled them out for just 173.

1996 World Cup

The second World Cup match between India and Pakistan took place in the quarter finals of the 196 World Cup at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Since India had the home support in this game, they started as favourites and they completely justified that tag with their performance in the match.

India won the toss in that match as well and since the Bengaluru track always gets slightly slower in the second innings and helps the spinners, they chose to bat first and put a pretty reasonable total of 287 on the board. Pakistan, chasing that total, fell short by 39 runs as Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad grabbed 3 wickets apiece.

1999 World Cup

Pakistan bumped into India in the next World Cup again in the second round of the tournament which was the Super Six round. The toss of the coin went in the favour of the Indian team again and without any hesitation, they decided they would bat first because Pakistan had a lethal bowling attack and they didn’t want to chase against them.

They gave Pakistan a target of 227, which was very chaseable, but Pakistan, to everyone’s surprise, couldn’t go anywhere close to the target despite having pretty decent batsmen in their ranks and India won by 47 runs.

Pakistan and India met in the World Cup for the fourth time in 2003 in South Africa and for the first time, Pakistan managed to win a toss against India in the World Cup, but that didn’t change their fortunes. They batted first and got to a total of 273 courtesy Saeed Anwar’s century, but it was chased down successfully by India in 45.4 overs.

Sachin Tendulkar played one of the best innings of his ODI career in that game as he scored 98 off just 75 balls.

2011 World Cup

The 2011 India vs Pakistan World Cup encounter was a huge occasion. It was the semi-final of the tournament and India were the hosts, but Pakistan were playing really well in that tournament as well.

The Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to impose the scoreboard pressure on Pakistan by batting first. As it turned out, India couldn’t score the total they would have liked to as they scored only 260, but they defended it successfully as they restricted Pakistan to only 231.

It was the first game for both India and Pakistan in the tournament and they were both looking to have a winning start. India batted first again and Virat Kohli, the Indian batting sensation, scored his second World Cup century in that game as he made sure India reach the 300-mark.

Chasing 300 was always going to be difficult for Pakistan and they could never really pose a challenge to India as they were sent packing in just 47 overs at the score of 224, with Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav getting 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
