This match was purely dominated by the Indian players. Apart from winning the toss nothing else went right for Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimane secured Sri Lanka but that was not enough. 

India Vs Sri Lanka – Match Highlights

Their bowlers were smashed all over the park by the Indian Openers. Rohit and Rahul scored their tons which sealed this match to India’s favor. India goes in the semi-finals with good confidence. They beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets.  

India Vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights – Sri Lankan Innings 

Sri Lanka won the toss and batted first in this dead rubber. They needed their skipper to step up in this match but that wasn’t to be. Sri Lanka continued their old issues with the bat in this last encounter too. The openers failed again in starting the innings well. Skipper Karunaratne perished to Bumrah in the 3rd over. Dimuth Karunaratne was out for just 10 runs. Avishka Fernando was expected to play an inning as he did against West Indies. He started off of well with Kusal Perera and both the batsmen got themselves a good start. Unfortunately, Kusal Perera couldn’t convert this start yet again. He was out to Bumrah for just 18 runs. Then, it was Mendis who fell early. He was out for just 3 runs and Avishka Fernando’s innings also ended in the very next over. He couldn’t continue his good form. He was dismissed for 20 runs. Sri Lanka was in trouble. At 55 for 4, Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimane played a useful hand which helped the Lankan innings to recover.

They shared a much-needed partnership that helped Sri Lanka to make a comeback. Their 124 runs stand was the highlight of that Sri Lankan innings because there were no partnerships before and the batsmen couldn’t share any sorts of a partnership after the dismissal of Thirimane. This partnership worked well for Sri Lanka. For the first time, the Indian bowlers were under pressure in this innings. Both Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimane played Kuldeep Yadav well. As the china man was not in his best still. They scored their fifties and attacked the Indian bowlers at will. But this stand didn’t stand long for India as Kuldeep got the breakthrough which India needed the most. Thirimane was out after he made 53 runs. He was out to Kuldeep Yadav. 

Then came Dhanajaya de Silva. He batted well with Angelo Mathews who got to the 3rd ODI ton of his career and this was his 3rd ODI century against India as well. Mathews and de Silva tried to maximize the total but the Indian pacers were too good in the last overs. Angelo Mathews looked to up the run rate and got out to Bumrah. Mathews was dismissed after he scored magnificent 111 runs. It was Dhananjaya De Silva who took the Lankan innings to 260 run mark. De Silva was not out on 29 runs and Sri Lanka finished on 264 runs in their 50 overs.

India Vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights – Indian Bowling

The Indian bowlers were good in this match too. They rested Shami for this dead rubber and picked up Ravindra Jadeja in his place. They also rested Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav replaced Chahal. Ravindra Jadeja was economical. But Kuldeep struggled a bit. He was not in his best of rhymes. Even though he picked the crucial wicket of Thirimane but still he wasn’t effective in this match. Jasprit Bumrah was the stand out bowler for India today. He was again the highest wicket-taker. He took 3 wickets while Bhuvi, Kuldeep, Jadeja, and Pandya took 1 wicket each to their names. 

India Vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights – Indian Batting 

After India dominated with the ball, they also dominated with the bat in hand. The chase was left one-sided by Indian openers. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started their innings with positive and good intent. Both the openers looked to score runs straight away. They shared their 2nd back to back hundred run stand and pushed Sri Lanka on the back foot. Rohit Sharma continued his amazing run in this world cup. Now its Rohit Sharma the highest run-getter of the 2019 cricket world cup. After he completed his fifty run milestone he got to his 5th world cup century and broke the record of Kumara Sangakkara’s 4 world cup hundreds. Sanga made this record in 2015 world cup. 

KL Rahul also looked good. This time he didn’t waste his promising start. The openers shared a partnership of 189 runs and stole the show from Sri Lanka. Rohit wanted to score those remaining runs to cross Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in a single edition of the world cup. But he fell 26 runs short of that record. Hit Man was out after scoring sublime 103 runs. Then it was a hundred from KL Rahul. His first one in the current world cup tournament. He looked to finish the match early. He hit some lusty blows to Lasith Malinga’s bowling. But eventually, Malinga got his wicket. KL Rahul was out after making wonderful 111 runs. Rishab Pant was in hurry to finish the game quickly but he didn’t last for long. Udana caught Pant plumb in front for just 4 runs. Then it was a finishing kick given by Hardik Pandya and skipper Virat Kohli. 

Kohli was unbeaten on 34 runs and Pandya was just 4 not out. India chased down the target 43.3 overs and won this contest by 7 wickets. 

India Vs Sri Lanka Match Highlights – Sri Lanka Bowling 

Sri Lanka has no answers to India’s dominance. They were all over the place in this match. They didn’t bowl well as they did against England and West Indies. 

Only 3 wickets fell to Sri Lanka in that inning. Malinga, Udana, and Rajtha picked up 1 wicket each to their name. 

Rohit Sharma was named the man of the match for his wonderful 103 runs.
