Following their battering of Thailand in their tournament opener a couple of days back in what was billed to be a stiff challenge for them, the Indian football side took on UAE in their second match of the premier tournament on 10th January, Thursday. The match for India comes bearing with it the opportunity of becoming the first side from the country to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Asian Cup for the first time since 1964. The country has in their four appearances at the event, only once earlier progressed out of the group stages and the unit will be looking to churn out a performance similar to their first match as they look to overturn a nasty record.

Going into the tournament, goals were considered a major issue for this Indian squad and they put rest to all those qualms with an irresistible and incredible attacking performance that saw them come flying out of the blocks in the second half. Technical mastery in the midfield and forward line paired with a resolute defensive display had helped the Indians record their largest ever victory at the Asian Cup.
For India, a major factor that could play into seeing their match against UAE end in their favour is the momentum they carry into the encounter. The back four’s display come match day will be of imperative importance to India’s hopes. Despite shutting out Thailand to just one goal after maintaining their shape, organisation and tackling with purpose, India showed vulnerabilities while keeping out the set-pieces. They were lacklustre in the air, fluctuating on and off far too often and while Thailand couldn’t capitalise on that weakness, it won’t be long before this comes back to haunt India.
